Biography

Short Description

Dalmau Moner, also known in Latin and Castilian sources as Dalmatius or Dalmacio Moner and in Catalan sometimes as Dalmau Moner i Cardona, was a fourteenth-century Catalan priest of the Order of Preachers, later venerated as a blessed in the Roman Catholic Church. He was born in 1291 at Santa Coloma de Farners, in the Principality of Catalonia under the Crown of Aragon, to a family of the local nobility. His relatives directed him toward a secular career. He received his early schooling in Girona and then studied at the University of Montpellier, then a major centre for legal learning. Tradition holds that he was trained in the law and that a professional life in that field was expected of him before he turned toward religion.

In 1314 he entered the Dominican convent in Girona. After the novitiate and the order’s course of philosophy and theology he was ordained priest and remained attached to that house, which was one of the principal Dominican communities in Catalonia. He taught and was remembered for attention to his pupils and to younger friars. Accounts of his life, which are largely hagiographical and often later in date, present him as combining the Dominican duties of study and instruction with a strong inclination to silence, fasting, and penance.

Seeking a more contemplative life, he obtained permission from his superiors to live as a hermit while remaining a Dominican. He withdrew to a cave in the countryside of the diocese of Girona, a site later associated with his memory as the Cova de Sant Dalmau. There he followed an austere routine of prayer and mortification, returning to the convent for the sacraments and for such community obligations as his superiors required. Later tradition ascribes to him counsel, prophecy, and miracles, and treats him as an example of the eremitical strand that occasionally appeared inside the medieval Dominican order. The details of particular wonders and of his inner life rest mainly on that later pious literature rather than on strictly contemporary records.

He died on 24 September 1341 and was buried in the church of the Dominican convent of Sant Domènec in Girona. His tomb became a focus of local devotion in Girona and in his native Santa Coloma de Farners, of which he is regarded as a patron. His liturgical memorial is kept on 26 September. He was never canonized and is honoured as a blessed on the basis of a longstanding cult; surviving notices of papal confirmation of that cult are not consistent enough to name the pope with certainty. Historical evidence for his biography remains limited, and much of what is repeated about him belongs to regional hagiographical tradition of Catalonia rather than to a full contemporary vita.
