Biography

Short Description

Saint Damhnade, whose name also appears as Damhnat, Damnat, and Davnet, was an early Irish virgin saint whose cult is centred on the Sliabh Beagh uplands of Ulster, a region that today includes parts of County Monaghan, County Fermanagh, and County Tyrone. The civil and ecclesiastical parish of Tedavnet in County Monaghan derives its name from the Irish Tigh Damhnata (house of Damhnat), which points to a church or small monastic foundation associated with her. She is entered on 13 June in the Martyrology of Tallaght, a calendar compiled at the monastery of Tallaght in the eighth or ninth century, as Damnat of Sliab Betha; the same commemoration is repeated in the twelfth-century Martyrology of Gorman and in the seventeenth-century Martyrology of Donegal compiled by Mícheál Ó Cléirigh.

No contemporary vita or annalistic notice of Damhnade survives, and therefore neither her year of birth nor her year of death can be established. Irish tradition customarily assigns local founding virgins of this type to the fifth or sixth century, the period in which Christianity was taking root in the northern kingdoms, but that dating is conventional rather than documentary. Later hagiographers, including some compilers of the Roman Martyrology and popular writers in the modern period, have proposed that Damhnade is identical with Saint Dymphna of Geel in Brabant, the legendary Irish princess who fled a pagan father intent on an incestuous marriage and was martyred in the Low Countries. The identification rests on the resemblance of the names and on shared themes of consecrated virginity and flight; it is not universally accepted, because Dymphna’s feast falls on 15 May rather than 13 June and because Damhnade’s cult is geographically fixed in Sliabh Beagh rather than in Belgium.

The principal material witness to her cult is the Bachall Damhnait, or Crozier of Saint Damhnat, a bronze staff of office that was preserved for many generations by the Duffy family of Tedavnet, who served as its hereditary keepers. The crozier is now in the collections of the National Museum of Ireland in Dublin. Local devotion has also attached to holy wells and other sites in the parish that bear her name. Unlike the cult of Dymphna, which spread widely on the Continent and became associated with the care of the mentally ill, Damhnade’s veneration remained essentially regional, focused on the church and landscape that preserved her name.

Because the written record is so thin, Damhnade belongs to the large group of early Irish saints who are known chiefly through martyrologies, place-names, and relics rather than through a narrative life. She is consistently described as a virgin, and there is no evidence that she married or had children. She held neither the papacy nor a patriarchal see. No papal bull of canonization from the later medieval or Tridentine period is recorded for her; like the great majority of saints of the early Irish church, she was honoured by popular cultus and liturgical commemoration long before the Holy See reserved to itself the formal process of canonization. Her memory therefore illustrates both the vitality of local female religious life in early Christian Ireland and the limits of what the surviving sources can tell the historian.
