Biography

Short Description

Damian Nam Myŏng-hyŏg (also written Nam Myeong-hyeok; Korean 남명혁) was a nineteenth-century Korean Catholic layman and catechist, one of the 103 Korean Martyrs. He was born in 1802 in Seoul, in the Joseon kingdom, into a yangban family of the hereditary nobility. Like other men of his class he received a classical Confucian education. Catholicism had entered Korea in the late eighteenth century through lay scholars rather than foreign missionaries, and it remained a prohibited religion. Nam encountered the faith, was baptized under the name Damian, and thereafter worked as a catechist, instructing others in Christian doctrine at a time when such teaching was a capital offense.

Joseon law treated Christianity as a heterodox and politically subversive creed, above all because Catholics refused state-mandated ancestral rites. Repeated persecutions struck the community through the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Nam lived as a married lay believer of noble rank whose catechetical work made him a natural target. In 1839 the Gihae persecution, among the harshest anti-Catholic campaigns of the century, produced mass arrests in the capital. Officials sought recantations and the names of other Christians; catechists and heads of Catholic households were pursued with particular severity.

Nam was arrested in Seoul, interrogated, and tortured. Accounts assembled later for the Church’s beatification process present him as refusing apostasy. On 24 May 1839 he was beheaded at the Seosomun execution ground in Seoul, together with other Catholics condemned in the same round of trials, among them Augustine Yi Kwang-hon. He was in his late thirties. His martyrdom belongs to the cluster of 1839 executions that later formed the core of the first large group of Korean candidates for beatification.

The Korean Church and foreign missionaries gathered testimonies and records of these deaths. Nam Myŏng-hyŏg was beatified on 5 July 1925 by Pope Pius XI among seventy-nine martyrs of Korea, chiefly victims of the 1839 and 1846 persecutions. He was canonized in Seoul on 6 May 1984 by Pope John Paul II together with 102 companions (ninety-three Koreans and ten French missionaries). The group is liturgically commemorated on 20 September. Beyond his origin in the Seoul nobility, his marriage, his work as a catechist, and the date and place of his execution, surviving Western-language notices remain brief; fuller detail rests on Korean ecclesiastical historical work drawing on nineteenth-century records and the beatification acts.
