Biography

Short Description

The individual recorded as Daniel de Grammont (Wikidata Q1868579) is not attested in the principal hagiographical, episcopal, or monastic sources that normally document Western or Eastern Christian saints, bishops, and religious founders. Standard reference works such as the Bibliotheca Sanctorum, the Acta Sanctorum, the Roman Martyrology, and the major national biographical dictionaries do not furnish a securely identifiable vita under this name. As a result, fundamental facts—date and place of birth, date and place of death, ecclesiastical career, and any cult—cannot be verified from reliable historical evidence and must be left unspecified.

The surname or toponymic “de Grammont” is associated with more than one locality in medieval and early-modern Europe. Grammont is the French name of Geraardsbergen in Flanders, site of a notable Benedictine abbey dedicated to Saint Adrian; it is also close in spelling to Grandmont, the Limousin mother-house of the Order of Grandmont founded in the twelfth century. Homonymous nobles of the house of Gramont appear in French court and military history. None of these connections, however, can be demonstrated to apply to the subject of this notice without primary-source confirmation, and none should be assumed.

No feast day is assigned to Daniel de Grammont in liturgical calendars of the Latin, Byzantine, or Oriental churches. No process of beatification or canonization is known to have been opened, and he does not appear among the popes of Rome or Alexandria nor among the patriarchs or catholicoi of the Eastern churches. Information concerning membership in a religious order, marriage, or offspring is likewise wanting.

In the present state of the evidence, therefore, Daniel de Grammont remains an obscure figure. Responsible historical writing requires that silence be preferred to conjecture. Should archival discoveries—charters, necrologies, or local chronicles—later permit a documented reconstruction of his life, that reconstruction can be undertaken; until then, the biographical record must be acknowledged as essentially blank.
