Biography

Short Description

Daniel of Moscow, known in the Russian tradition as Daniil Aleksandrovich, was the youngest son of Grand Prince Alexander Nevsky. He was born in 1261 in the northeastern Rus' lands then dominated by the Grand Principality of Vladimir and subject to the overlordship of the Golden Horde. When his father died in 1263, the still modest town of Moscow was assigned to Daniel as his appanage, while his elder brothers received more substantial principalities. Because he was a small child, Moscow was governed during his minority by boyars and by relatives, including his uncle Yaroslav of Tver, who held the grand princely throne of Vladimir. Daniel came of age and began to exercise personal rule in the later thirteenth century, in a period of frequent princely strife and of continued Mongol tribute and intervention in the succession to Vladimir.

His reign is remembered in later Muscovite chronicle writing and in Orthodox hagiography for relative peaceableness and for the first important monastic foundations in Moscow. He is credited with establishing the Danilov Monastery, dedicated to the stylite saint whose name he bore, traditionally in the early 1280s, and he is also associated with the foundation of the Epiphany Monastery. These houses helped to give Moscow an ecclesiastical identity distinct from older centers such as Vladimir and Rostov. Politically he enlarged the Moscow principality: toward the end of the thirteenth century and in the first years of the fourteenth he gained Kolomna from the Ryazan princes and, in 1302, received Pereyaslavl-Zalessky by the will of his childless nephew Ivan Dmitrievich. He generally sought to avoid destructive wars with his brothers and with the Horde, though he could not remain entirely outside the conflicts that followed Alexander Nevsky's death.

According to Orthodox tradition, Daniel accepted the monastic tonsure shortly before his death. He died in Moscow on 4 March 1303 and was buried at the Danilov Monastery. He left sons, of whom Yuri Danilovich and Ivan Danilovich (later called Ivan Kalita) are the best known; through them he became the ancestor of the later grand princes and tsars of Moscow. In 1652 his relics were uncovered and reported incorrupt, which confirmed and spread his local cult. The Russian Orthodox Church commemorates him on 4 March, the anniversary of his repose, and on 30 August, the anniversary of the uncovering of his relics, according to the Julian calendar used in Russian liturgical practice. He is venerated as a right-believing prince and as a heavenly patron of Moscow.

The monastery he founded was closed in the Soviet period and restored to the Russian Orthodox Church in the 1980s, when it became a patriarchal residence; his relics were returned there. Chronicle evidence for Daniel's reign is thinner than for later Muscovite rulers, and some details of his foundations and campaigns rest on later tradition as well as on contemporary records. Nonetheless, historians of medieval Rus' regard his principality as the starting point of Moscow's rise from a minor appanage to the dominant center of the northeastern lands.
