Biography

Short Description

Daniel of Padua, known in Italian as San Daniele di Padova, is venerated in the Catholic Church as a deacon and martyr of the church of Padua in northern Italy. According to medieval hagiographical tradition he lived in the second century and served as deacon to Saint Prosdocimus, who is honored in local legend as the first bishop of Padua and as a disciple of the Apostle Peter. The same tradition describes Daniel as a convert from Judaism who received Christian baptism and was ordained to the diaconate. No contemporary documentary evidence for his life survives. The narratives that associate him with Prosdocimus and with a Petrine foundation of the Paduan church belong to later legend rather than to verifiable second-century history. Martyrologies and standard hagiographical reference works commonly assign his death to the year 168, in the reign of the emperor Marcus Aurelius, but that date rests on tradition rather than on an independent historical record.

The legendary passion of Daniel recounts that he was put to death in Padua for his Christian faith. Later accounts and iconography associate his martyrdom with extreme violence, including the driving of a nail into his body, and they state that his remains were hidden or cast aside and subsequently recovered. Whatever the historical core of these stories, Daniel was remembered in Padua as a local martyr. The cult becomes clearly visible in the documentary record only in the eleventh century. Traditional accounts place the discovery, or inventio, of relics attributed to him in 1075, during the episcopate of Bishop Ulderico of Padua and in connection with work on the cathedral. The day of that discovery, 3 January, became the date of his principal feast, which is the day on which he is listed in the Roman Martyrology as a martyr of Padua.

Relics identified as those of Saint Daniel have been preserved and venerated in the cathedral of Padua, the Duomo dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. He is honored as one of the patron saints of the city of Padua, alongside other local figures such as Prosdocimus and Justina of Padua, and later Saint Anthony of Padua, whose worldwide cult eventually overshadowed the older local martyrs in popular devotion. Daniel’s own cult remained essentially diocesan. In art he is typically represented as a deacon, sometimes holding the palm of martyrdom or a nail as the instrument of his death. Like other saints of the early centuries, he was not the object of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval type; his name entered the catalogue of saints by popular veneration and episcopal recognition, a process commonly described as pre-congregation canonization.

Little else about Daniel can be established with confidence. There is no reliable evidence concerning the place or year of his birth, his family, or whether he was married or had children, all of which remain unknown. He did not hold episcopal, patriarchal, or papal office, and he belonged to no later religious order: the sources present him simply as a deacon of the Paduan church. A careful historical assessment must therefore present him as a figure whose second-century setting is a matter of pious tradition, while the medieval inventio of his relics and the subsequent liturgical cult in Padua are the first points at which his memory can be followed in the sources. He continues to be commemorated on 3 January, and his patronage of Padua preserves the memory of the city’s early Christian martyrs within the later, better-documented history of the diocese.
