Biography

Short Description

Daniel of Samarate (Italian: Daniele da Samarate) is known in onomastic form as a figure associated with Samarate, a comune in the Province of Varese in Lombardy, northern Italy, historically within the orbit of the Archdiocese of Milan. In Catholic usage, especially among mendicant and monastic clergy of the Italian peninsula, a name of the type “N. da [place]” ordinarily signals a religious who took his hometown—or the convent with which he was identified—as part of his religious name. Samarate itself lies in a region with a dense fabric of parish life, Franciscan and Capuchin houses, and Ambrosian liturgical tradition, so the epithet is geographically coherent. Beyond that toponymic identification, however, standard hagiographical repertoires do not preserve a securely documented life.

He does not correspond in any verified way to the better-attested saints named Daniel in the Roman Martyrology or in the major Franciscan calendars. Those include, among others, the prophet Daniel; Daniel the Stylite of the fifth century; Daniel of Padua; and the Franciscan Daniel who led six companions to martyrdom at Ceuta in 1227 (often called Daniel Fasanella or Daniel of Calabria). None of those figures is linked by reliable sources to Samarate in Lombardy. Daniel of Samarate is likewise not identifiable with any Bishop of Rome or with any patriarch or catholicos of the Eastern churches. No feast day, no decree of beatification or canonization, and no list of patronages can be confirmed from widely available historical or liturgical sources.

Obscure Italian religious of this naming type were often remembered only in convent necrologies, local diocesan fasti, or the internal chronicles of an order. Their cult, if it existed at all, tended to remain local: a mention in a house chronicle, an anniversary Mass, or a notice in a nineteenth- or twentieth-century order history rather than inscription in the universal calendar. In the absence of a published vita, of acts of a beatification process, or of contemporary narrative sources that can be checked, it is not possible to state the century in which he lived, the institute to which he belonged, the places of his ministry, or the circumstances of his death and burial. Claims that would fill those gaps would be conjectural.

What can be said with caution is therefore limited to context. Northern Italy, and Lombardy in particular, produced large numbers of diocesan priests and regular clergy whose memory never passed into the general martyrologies. If Daniel of Samarate belongs to that class, his life would have been that of a Catholic cleric or religious formed in the ecclesiastical culture of the Milanese church, possibly in a mendicant setting, but that remains an inference from naming custom rather than a documented biography. Local archives in Samarate, the historical archives of the Archdiocese of Milan, and the provincial archives of the religious families that have worked in the Varese area would be the proper next places of inquiry.

Until such records are identified and published, a responsible account must stop at the name, the place, and the admission of uncertainty. No birth or death year, no verified religious order, no spouse or children, and no confirmed cultic titles can be given without substituting guesswork for evidence. The present notice therefore records an obscure Lombard religious designation and the limits of what can currently be verified about the man who bore it.
