Biography
Daniele Badiali was born on 29 March 1943 in Faenza, in the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy. He was formed in the diocesan seminary of Faenza and ordained a priest on 6 June 1967 for the Diocese of Faenza (later the Diocese of Faenza-Modigliana). For two decades he served as a diocesan priest in his home region, exercising ordinary parish ministry. The missionary impulse of the post-conciliar Church, and the Fidei Donum practice by which diocesan priests are loaned to churches in need, shaped his later vocation. He was not a member of a religious order; he remained a secular priest of Faenza throughout his life.
In 1988 he left Italy for the Diocese of Chachapoyas in the Amazonas region of Peru. There he worked as a Fidei Donum missionary among poor and remote communities, including the parish of Santa María de Nieva in the province of Condorcanqui, an area inhabited largely by indigenous Awajún people and mestizo settlers. His ministry combined sacramental care, catechesis, and practical solidarity. He lived simply, administered parish resources for the benefit of the local poor, and became a trusted pastoral presence in a region marked by isolation, poverty, and social tension.
On the night of 15–16 March 1997 an assailant entered his residence and demanded money. Badiali refused to hand over funds that belonged to the parish and the community. He was shot and died of his wounds on 16 March 1997, a few days before his fifty-fourth birthday. The Catholic Church later recognized the killing as martyrdom, judging that it was bound up with his priestly identity and his uncompromising charity. His remains were repatriated to Italy and buried in Faenza.
After the diocesan inquiry and Roman examination of his life and death, Pope Francis recognized his martyrdom. On 15 June 2019 he was beatified in Faenza; Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu presided as papal legate. Blessed Daniele Badiali is commemorated on 16 March. He is remembered as a diocesan missionary priest who gave his life in the Peruvian Amazon at the end of the twentieth century, a witness of evangelical poverty and pastoral charity rather than of high ecclesiastical office.
