Biography

Short Description

Detailed Narrative

Daniele Fasanella, also known as Daniel of Belvedere, was a Franciscan friar and priest born in Belvedere Marittimo in Calabria, in southern Italy, toward the end of the twelfth century. The precise year of his birth is not recorded in surviving sources. He entered the Order of Friars Minor in the early thirteenth century, when the order founded by Saint Francis of Assisi was spreading rapidly through Italy. Ordained a priest, he later served as Minister Provincial of the Franciscan province of Calabria, a position of leadership over the friars of that region.

The early Franciscans cultivated a strong missionary impulse, including missions among Muslims in North Africa and the Levant. Five Franciscans had already been put to death in Morocco in 1220. Sharing that zeal, Fasanella obtained permission to preach in Muslim lands. In 1227 he set out with six companions—the friars Samuel, Angelo, Donnolo, Leo, Nicholas, and Hugolino—for Ceuta, a major port on the North African side of the Strait of Gibraltar, then under Almohad rule.

In Ceuta the friars preached publicly, proclaiming the Christian faith and calling for conversion. Open Christian preaching of this kind was not tolerated, and they were arrested. Imprisoned and pressed to recant and accept Islam, they refused. On 10 October 1227 they were condemned and beheaded. Contemporary and near-contemporary Franciscan sources preserved the memory of the group as the Martyrs of Ceuta, with Fasanella as their leader.

Veneration of Daniele Fasanella and his companions grew within the Franciscan order and in Calabria. Pope Leo X confirmed their cult and beatified them in 1516. Their liturgical memorial is kept on 10 October. In his native Belvedere Marittimo he has been honored as a local patron, and he remains one of the better-attested early Franciscan missionary martyrs of the thirteenth century, even though many details of his life before the Moroccan mission are unknown.
