Biography

Short Description

Danylo Bratkovskyi (also rendered Daniel Bratkowski) was a Ruthenian nobleman, satirical poet and political activist of the late seventeenth century whose life unfolded in the Volhynian palatinate of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. He was born into a szlachta family in Volhynia in the middle decades of the seventeenth century; the precise year and place of his birth are not recorded in surviving documents and are conventionally given only approximately. As a member of the regional nobility he took part in the political life of the Commonwealth’s eastern voivodeships, a milieu marked by religious tension among Roman Catholic, Uniate and Orthodox communities after the Union of Brest and by the lingering consequences of the mid-century Cossack wars.

In 1697 Bratkovskyi issued in Kraków a volume of Polish-language verse entitled Świat po części przejrzany (The World Partially Examined). The collection comprises several hundred short satirical and moralizing poems that survey the estates of contemporary society. The verses mock the avarice and ignorance of certain clergy, the luxury and idleness of magnates, the venality of officials, and the misery of peasants and townspeople. Although composed in Polish, the work has been regarded by later Ukrainian scholars as a significant example of Baroque literature produced by a Ruthenian author and as an expression of social criticism rooted in the Orthodox and Cossack cultural world of Right-Bank Ukraine.

Toward 1702 Bratkovskyi became implicated in the Cossack revolt headed by Semen Paliy on the Right Bank of the Dnieper. The uprising, which coincided with the early years of the Great Northern War, aimed at ending Polish administration in the region and restoring Cossack military autonomies. Bratkovskyi’s exact role—whether as a noble intermediary, a publicist or an active conspirator—is imperfectly documented, yet Commonwealth authorities treated him as a traitor. He was arrested, confined in Lutsk Castle, and brought to trial.

On 26 November 1702 he was publicly executed in Lutsk. Later Ukrainian historical writing has portrayed him as a martyr for the Orthodox population and for Ukrainian political rights, while Polish sources of the period regarded him as a rebel. No contemporary evidence has been found concerning a spouse or children, and he belonged to no religious order. He has never been beatified or canonized, nor is a feast day associated with his name. His literary reputation rests on the 1697 verse collection, which remains the principal surviving witness to his thought.
