Biography

Short Description

Daría Campillo Paniagua, known in religion as Sister Daría of Saint Sophia (Sor Daría de Santa Sofía), was a Spanish Roman Catholic nun of the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of Saint Anne. She was born in 1873 in Torrelapaja, a small municipality in the province of Zaragoza in Aragon. The congregation she entered had been founded in Zaragoza in 1804 by María Ràfols and Juan Bonal to nurse the sick in hospitals and to assist the abandoned poor. Daría took vows in this community and lived as a professed sister dedicated to its works of charity.

Few intimate biographical particulars about her family background, education, or successive community assignments survive in general historical literature. This scarcity is typical of many Spanish religious of her generation whose public memory was later shaped almost entirely by the circumstances of their death. The Sisters of Charity of Saint Anne maintained houses in several Spanish cities and were known for hospital service and care of the needy. By the 1930s Sister Daría was associated with the congregation’s presence in Madrid.

The Spanish Civil War, which began in July 1936, produced one of the most intense outbreaks of anticlerical violence in modern European history. In the Republican zone, bishops, priests, religious, and lay Catholics were killed in large numbers. Consecrated women were expelled from convents, detained, and in many cases executed by militias because of their Catholic identity. Sister Daría, then in her early sixties, was killed in Madrid in 1936 in odium fidei, as part of that persecution of the Church.

On 28 October 2007 Pope Benedict XVI beatified 498 victims of the Spanish Civil War persecution in a ceremony in Saint Peter’s Square. Daría Campillo Paniagua was numbered among this group, commonly called the 498 Spanish Martyrs, which included clergy, men and women religious, and laity from many dioceses and institutes. She has not been canonized. Her life and death illustrate the fidelity of ordinary hospital sisters caught in the twentieth-century martyrdom of the Church in Spain, a history documented more fully for the group as a whole than for each individual member.
