Biography

Short Description

Saint Dathus, whose name also appears in Latin sources as Datus and in Italian as Dato, is remembered as an early bishop of the church of Ravenna in the Roman province of Flaminia et Picenum, in what is now Emilia-Romagna in northern Italy. He belongs to the first, poorly documented centuries of that see. Virtually everything that can be said about him derives from much later medieval episcopal catalogues rather than from contemporary records. The most important of these catalogues is the Liber Pontificalis Ecclesiae Ravennatis, composed in the ninth century by the Ravennate cleric Andreas Agnellus. Agnellus placed Dathus in the sequence of bishops who followed Saint Apollinaris, the traditional founder of the church of Ravenna, and immediately after Saint Probus. Later compilations sometimes number him as the eighth bishop of the see. These lists typically assign him to the later second century of the Christian era, but the dates are schematic and cannot be confirmed by independent evidence.

No details of Dathus’s origin, family, or career before his episcopate have been preserved. There are no surviving letters, sermons, or inscriptions that can be attributed to him, nor any authentic passio or vita from antiquity. He is known solely as a name in the succession of Ravenna and as a saint in the liturgical tradition. The Roman Martyrology, drawing on earlier local calendars, commemorates him on 3 July with the brief notice that he was bishop and confessor at Ravenna. In the absence of any narrative of martyrdom, he is classed as a confessor, that is, a holy bishop who died in peace. Local tradition in Ravenna maintained that his relics were kept in the cathedral, but the identification and history of those relics rest on medieval claims that cannot be verified archaeologically or by early documents.

The early episcopal list of Ravenna was shaped in a period when the city had become first an imperial residence and later the seat of an archbishop who claimed metropolitan and even quasi-patriarchal dignity over a large region of Italy. In that context, an unbroken succession reaching back to the apostolic age, represented by Apollinaris as a disciple of Saint Peter, served to underwrite the prestige of the see. Figures such as Dathus therefore function in the sources primarily as links in that chain. Modern historians of the late antique church treat the pre-fourth-century bishops of Ravenna as largely legendary or at best unrecoverable as historical individuals. No archaeological or epigraphic evidence from the second century has been securely connected with Dathus.

Devotion to Saint Dathus remained essentially local and liturgical. He was never the object of a formal process of canonization of the kind that developed in the later Middle Ages and was centralized in Rome; his cult belongs to the ancient, popular, and episcopal veneration of local holy bishops that predates the Congregation of Rites. He does not appear as a prominent patron of particular places, professions, or causes beyond the general patronage that any founding or early bishop might exercise over his own church. Outside the martyrologies and the traditional lists of Ravennate bishops, he has left little trace in later hagiography or art.

In summary, Dathus stands among the many obscure episcopal saints of the early Italian church whose memory was preserved by the piety of their own communities and by the Roman Martyrology, but whose lives cannot be reconstructed in any biographical detail. What can be affirmed with caution is that the church of Ravenna, by the early Middle Ages, numbered him among its early bishops and honored him as a saint on the third of July. Beyond that liturgical and catalogical fact, the historical Dathus, if he existed as a distinct person of the second century, remains inaccessible to the historian.
