Biography

David Galván Bermúdez was born on 29 January 1881 in Guadalajara, in the western Mexican state of Jalisco, the son of José Trinidad Galván and Mariana Bermúdez. He grew up in a Catholic family of modest means and entered the Conciliar Seminary of Guadalajara to prepare for the priesthood. After a period in which he interrupted his studies and lived as a layman, he returned to the seminary and completed his formation. He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Guadalajara in 1909. Following ordination he taught at the seminary, including in the natural sciences, and exercised pastoral ministry in the city and archdiocese.

The Mexican Revolution, which began in 1910, produced years of civil war and a climate of growing hostility toward the Catholic Church. Clergy were harassed, driven into hiding or exile, and in some cases killed, while public worship was restricted. Father Galván remained in Guadalajara rather than fleeing. He continued to celebrate the sacraments and to assist civilians when fighting and disorder reached the city. In January 1915 Guadalajara was caught up in the struggle among revolutionary factions, and soldiers occupied the streets.

On 30 January 1915, the day after his thirty-fourth birthday, he was arrested by troops. Accounts of his martyrdom relate that he had gone out to aid the wounded and to give the last sacraments, and that he had also intervened when soldiers attempted to seize young women, defending their dignity and the Church’s teaching on marriage and chastity. He was given no proper trial and was executed by firing squad in Guadalajara that same day. The Catholic Church later judged his death to be martyrdom in odium fidei, suffered for his priesthood and for the faith.

Pope John Paul II beatified David Galván Bermúdez on 22 November 1992 and canonized him on 21 May 2000 in Saint Peter’s Square, together with Saint Cristóbal Magallanes Jara and other Mexican martyrs of the revolutionary period. He is commemorated on 30 January, the anniversary of his death, and is also honored with that group of martyrs on 21 May. He is remembered as a diocesan priest who stayed at his post in time of persecution and who died for the Gospel in his native city.
