Biography

Short Description

David the Dendrite, also known as David of Thessalonica or David of Thessaloniki, was a Christian hermit and ascetic of the fifth and sixth centuries, venerated as a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church. Hagiographical tradition states that he was a native of Mesopotamia. While still a young man he left that region and settled in Thessalonica, then a major port and ecclesiastical centre of the prefecture of Illyricum in the Eastern Roman Empire. There he entered the monastery of Saints Theodore and Mercurius, which stood near the city’s northern walls, and took up the monastic life.

After a period of ordinary monastic discipline, David adopted the rare ascetic practice of the dendrites, holy men who dwelt in trees in a manner analogous to the stylites who lived atop pillars. He climbed an almond tree beside the monastery church, fashioned a small platform among the branches, and remained there for three years, exposed to summer heat and winter cold. Inhabitants of Thessalonica came to the tree to seek his prayers and counsel. According to his Life, an angel at last instructed him to descend and to continue his ascetic struggle in a confined cell rather than in the open air, which he did.

In that cell David lived for many years as a recluse. Later tradition credits him with miracles, spiritual insight, and the gift of prophecy. A frequently repeated episode describes him carrying live coals in his bare hands in order to cense, without being burned. He was regarded as a heavenly intercessor for Thessalonica. Some versions of his vita connect him, late in life, with an appeal to the Emperor Justinian I concerning the city’s privileges or administrative standing; the historical kernel of that episode, if any, cannot be confirmed independently of the legendary narrative.

He is traditionally said to have died in 540 in Thessalonica and to have been buried in the city that had been the scene of his ascetic life. The Eastern Orthodox Church commemorates him on 26 June. In iconography he is often shown as an elderly monk, sometimes still associated with the almond tree that earned him the epithet Dendrite, from the Greek dendron, meaning tree. The church of Hosios David in Thessaloniki, originally the katholikon of the Latomou Monastery and known for its early Byzantine mosaic of the Vision of Ezekiel, later became linked with his cult. Apart from the outline preserved in synaxaria and in his Greek Life, most particulars of his career belong to pious tradition rather than to contemporary documentary record.
