Biography

Short Description

Celerinus was a Christian of the church of Carthage in Roman North Africa in the mid-third century. He is known from the contemporary letters of Saint Cyprian, bishop of Carthage, and from later martyrological tradition that commemorates him as a deacon. During the persecution under the emperor Decius, around the year 250, Celerinus was in Rome. There he was imprisoned for refusing to sacrifice according to the imperial edict. According to Cyprian, he remained in prison for nineteen days, enduring hunger and hardship, and emerged as a confessor of the faith without having apostatized.

His family was already marked by martyrdom. Cyprian records that Celerinus’s grandmother Celerina had been a martyr, as had two uncles who had served as soldiers: Laurentinus and Egnatius. After the Decian persecution, Cyprian appointed the still young Celerinus to the office of lector in the Carthaginian church, presenting the appointment in a letter to the clergy and people as an honor due both to Celerinus’s own confession and to the martyrs of his household. In the same period Celerinus, writing from Rome, corresponded with the confessor Lucian at Carthage about the reconciliation of Christians who had lapsed under persecution and about the letters of peace that some confessors were granting.

The Roman Martyrology later entered Celerinus as a deacon of Carthage who, after a glorious confession involving lengthy imprisonment and various torments, was crowned with martyrdom in the time of Decius. That notice goes beyond the evidence of Cyprian’s letters, which show Celerinus alive after the persecution of 250 and installed as a lector rather than as a deacon, and which do not record his death. Whether he was later ordained deacon, whether he died a martyr in a subsequent persecution, or whether the martyrology conflated confession with martyrdom, cannot be established from surviving third-century sources.

Celerinus is commemorated on 3 February. His historical importance lies in the light he sheds on the Decian crisis in Rome and Carthage: the suffering of confessors, the prestige of martyr families, the promotion of confessors into the clergy, and the disputed authority of confessors in reconciling the lapsed. He remains an obscure figure outside Cyprian’s correspondence and the brief martyrological entry; no reliable account of his birth, the date or place of his death, or a burial site has been preserved.
