Biography

Short Description

Deacon Nemesius is remembered in the liturgical tradition of Rome as a third-century deacon who suffered martyrdom together with his daughter, the virgin Lucilla. Notices of the pair appear in the Roman Martyrology and in later medieval passiones; they are not attested in contemporary third-century historical writers such as Eusebius of Caesarea. According to the received account, Nemesius lived in Rome in the middle of the third century. Pope Stephen I, who occupied the Roman see from 254 until 257, is said to have baptized Lucilla and to have ordained Nemesius to the diaconate. The family thus belonged to the Christian community of the imperial capital during the years immediately preceding the Valerian persecution.

The traditional narrative places their deaths in the persecution associated with the emperor Valerian. After they refused to abandon the Christian faith, Nemesius and Lucilla were beheaded. The same legendary cycle associates with them a group of companions: a Roman official named Symphronius (or Synphronius), who was converted by their constancy, together with members of his household often named Olympius or Olympia, Exuperia or Exuperius, and Theodulus. These additional figures belong to the later elaboration of the story and lack independent historical attestation. Historians have long observed chronological difficulties in the legend. If Pope Stephen himself buried the martyrs, their deaths would have to be dated before his own death in 257; yet the most severe imperial measures against the Roman clergy are generally placed in 257–258, during which Pope Sixtus II also suffered martyrdom. For this reason modern hagiographers treat the surviving Acts as historically unreliable in their particulars, while allowing that they may preserve the genuine memory of Roman martyrs named Nemesius and Lucilla.

According to the martyrological tradition, the bodies of the deacon and his daughter were first buried by Pope Stephen and were later translated by Pope Sixtus II to a more honorable resting place on the Appian Way. Older editions of the Roman Martyrology recorded the saints on two dates: 25 August, the traditional day of their passion, and 31 October, the day of the translation of the relics. The current Roman Martyrology commemorates Nemesius the deacon and Lucilla the virgin on 25 August. In subsequent centuries relics attributed to them were claimed by various churches in Rome and elsewhere in Italy; no single principal shrine can be identified with certainty from early evidence.

Beyond these liturgical and legendary notices, almost nothing can be established. No reliable source records Nemesius’s year or place of birth, his parentage, his occupation before ordination, or the name of Lucilla’s mother. The fact that he had a daughter indicates that he had been married, a circumstance not unusual among deacons of the third-century Roman church, for whom celibacy was not yet universally required. He is not known to have belonged to a religious order, did not hold the episcopal or papal office, and did not become the object of a specialized later patronage of places, professions, or causes. His cult remains that of an early Roman deacon-martyr whose story, however legendary in the form in which it has been transmitted, was received into the official martyrology of the Church of Rome.
