Biography

Short Description

Saint Delphinus (Latin Delphinus; French Delphin), bishop of Bordeaux in late Roman Gaul, is a fourth-century figure known almost entirely from conciliar records and from the letters of Saint Paulinus of Nola. Nothing reliable survives about his birth, parentage, or early career; he is not attested before he appears as bishop of Bordeaux by about 380. Bordeaux was then the chief city of Aquitania, a senatorial and ecclesiastical centre whose see ranked among the more important of western Gaul. Delphinus’s episcopate fell in the generation after the Council of Constantinople (381), when Nicene bishops in Gaul and Spain were still contesting Arian remnants and, more immediately, the spread of Priscillianism from Hispania into Aquitaine.

In 380 Delphinus took part in the Council of Zaragoza (Saragossa), which condemned propositions associated with Priscillian of Ávila. Priscillianism combined rigorous asceticism with speculative teachings that Catholic bishops judged dualist or otherwise heterodox; it found adherents among lay aristocrats and some clergy on both sides of the Pyrenees. A few years later a synod met at Bordeaux itself, around 384–385, to examine Priscillian. As the local bishop, Delphinus was central to that hearing. Priscillian refused to accept the Gallic synod’s authority in full, appealed to the imperial court, and was eventually executed at Trier under the usurper Magnus Maximus—an outcome that troubled other orthodox bishops, notably Martin of Tours, even while they continued to reject Priscillian’s doctrine. Delphinus’s own role is that of a firm anti-Priscillianist rather than of a partisan of bloodshed; surviving sources do not show him pressing for a capital sentence.

The most personal evidence for Delphinus comes from Pontius Meropius Paulinus, the Aquitanian magnate who later became bishop of Nola. Paulinus received baptism from Delphinus at Bordeaux around 389 and thereafter addressed him as a spiritual father. Paulinus’s letters speak of Delphinus with lasting reverence and also mention Amandus, a cleric formed in Delphinus’s circle who succeeded him in the see of Bordeaux. Delphinus belonged to the same trans-regional Nicene network as Ambrose of Milan; later tradition regularly names him among Ambrose’s friends and correspondents, though independent letters of Delphinus himself have not been preserved. His pastoral work, so far as it can be reconstructed, combined defence of orthodoxy, encouragement of serious baptismal and ascetic commitment among the Gallic aristocracy, and the training of clergy for the Bordelais church.

Traditional martyrologies place his death at Bordeaux on 24 December 403 (a few later notices give 404). He was succeeded by Saint Amandus. No contemporary vita survives, and the place of burial is not securely documented in early sources. His cult is of the pre-congregation type: he was honoured locally as a holy bishop and entered medieval martyrologies, with the Roman Martyrology commemorating him on 24 December. Beyond the Zaragoza and Bordeaux synods and the Paulinus correspondence, the administrative detail of his long episcopate, any writings of his own, and the circumstances of his last years remain obscure. He stands in the record as a typical, and relatively well-connected, Nicene bishop of Aquitaine in the last decades of the fourth century.
