Biography

Short Description

Saint Delphinus (also known as Delphin) was bishop of Bordeaux in late Roman Aquitaine during the final decades of the fourth century. Almost nothing can be verified about his family, education, or the place and date of his birth; the surviving literary record first attests him after he had already entered upon the episcopal office. He is generally held to have become bishop of Bordeaux around 380. His see was one of the principal cities of western Gaul, and his episcopate coincided with the reigns of Gratian, Valentinian II, and Theodosius I, a period in which the Gallic churches were consolidating Nicene orthodoxy while confronting both residual pagan practice and new heterodox movements.

Delphinus is most clearly documented in connection with the struggle against Priscillianism, an ascetic and theologically suspect movement that arose in Spain and gained adherents in parts of Gaul. He took part in the Council of Zaragoza (Saragossa) in 380, which condemned Priscillian and several of his followers. A further synod was held at Bordeaux itself around 384–385 to deal with the same controversy; as the local bishop, Delphinus was necessarily involved in that assembly. Instantius and other Priscillianist leaders were deposed. Delphinus belonged to the party of Gallic and Spanish bishops who sought to suppress the movement by ecclesiastical judgment rather than by leaving the matter solely to imperial courts, though the affair ultimately ended with Priscillian’s execution at Trier, an outcome that many western bishops viewed with unease.

He is also known through his relationship with Pontius Meropius Paulinus, the wealthy Bordelais senator who later became bishop of Nola and one of the major Latin Christian poets of the age. Paulinus received baptism from Delphinus at Bordeaux around 389. In subsequent correspondence Paulinus recalled Delphinus with marked respect and affection, which indicates that the bishop played a real part in Paulinus’s conversion and early Christian formation. Delphinus likewise stood in the wider network of western Nicene bishops: he corresponded with Ambrose of Milan, a fact that places him among the leading prelates of the Theodosian church in the Latin West rather than as a purely local figure.

Delphinus died on 24 December, according to the traditional date in 403 (a few later notices give 404), and was succeeded in the see of Bordeaux by Amandus. He was venerated as a saint in the church of Bordeaux, and his feast has been kept on 24 December. No contemporary vita survives, and medieval notices add little that can be independently checked. Beyond his episcopate, his role in the anti-Priscillianist councils, the baptism of Paulinus, and his contact with Ambrose, the documentary evidence is thin. He remains an important but sparsely recorded representative of the late antique Gallic episcopate.
