Biography

Short Description

Dentelin of Mons, also known as Dentlin, was a child saint of the seventh century associated with the region of Hainaut in the Merovingian Frankish kingdom, in territory that is now Belgium. He belonged to a family of Frankish nobility that later tradition honoured as a household of saints. His father was Madelgarus, known in religion as Vincent of Soignies, and his mother was Waltrude (Waudru), foundress of the religious community at Mons. Both parents are themselves venerated as saints. Dentelin’s siblings were Landericus (Landry), who became abbot of Soignies; Aldetrude, abbess of Maubeuge; and Madelberta, also abbess of Maubeuge. Their maternal aunt was Saint Aldegonde of Maubeuge. No contemporary charter or chronicle independently names Dentelin; knowledge of him depends on later medieval vitae of Waltrude, Vincent, and the related Hainaut saints.

According to the hagiographical tradition, Dentelin died in childhood, commonly said to have been about seven years of age. He therefore never entered monastic life as his brother and sisters did, held no ecclesiastical office, and left no acts or writings. The family’s turn to the religious life belongs to the mid-seventh century in Austrasia: Madelgarus became a monk, first associated with Haumont and later with the community at Soignies, while Waltrude established a convent at Mons after the couple separated by mutual consent. Precise years for Dentelin’s birth and death are not preserved in reliable early sources. Later round figures sometimes attached to him in modern compilations are inferences from his parents’ chronology rather than documented dates, and they should not be treated as established.

Veneration of Dentelin remained essentially local. He was commemorated with the other saints of his family in the churches of Mons and Soignies. Tradition associates his burial with Soignies, at the church later known as the Collegiate Church of Saint Vincent, where his father Vincent and his brother Landericus were also honoured. His cult did not develop a wide international following, a distinct legendary cycle of miracles, or a list of patronages comparable to those of major medieval saints. A feast on 16 March appears in several later calendars and popular compilations of saints; the Roman Martyrology does not give him an independent, well-known entry of the kind accorded to his mother.

Modern historical judgment treats the outline of the family—an aristocratic Christian household in seventh-century Hainaut whose parents founded religious houses and whose children were themselves venerated—as reflecting a genuine Merovingian noble milieu, while remaining cautious about anecdotal detail in the later vitae. Dentelin’s place in the tradition is that of a child saint of a holy family rather than that of a founder, bishop, missionary, or martyr. Beyond the kinship, the childhood death, the local cult in Hainaut, and the association with Soignies, little can be verified.
