Biography
Deogracias Palacios was a Spanish Roman Catholic priest of the Order of Augustinian Recollects, venerated as a blessed martyr of the Spanish Civil War and one of the seven Martyrs of Motril. He was born in 1901 in San Martín de Humada, a small rural locality in the province of Burgos in Castile. He entered the Augustinian Recollects, a mendicant reform of the Augustinian tradition that in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries maintained houses in Spain and in the missions. After novitiate, profession, and studies he was ordained a priest. Widely available sources preserve little about his family circumstances or personal writings; he is known chiefly through the record of his religious life and the later beatification process.
In the years before the Civil War he belonged to the Augustinian Recollect community in Motril, a coastal town in the province of Granada in Andalusia. The Recollects there kept a convent and church and carried out ordinary pastoral work among the local population. The 1930s were a time of sharp political and religious conflict in Spain. The Second Republic had enacted strongly anticlerical measures, and in parts of Andalusia hostility toward clergy and religious was already intense. Once the military rising of July 1936 was followed by revolutionary violence in the Republican zone, religious houses in Granada and the surrounding towns were directly attacked.
The Recollect convent in Motril was invaded. Deogracias Palacios was seized together with other members of the community and, on 25 July 1936, was executed by firing squad in Motril. He was thirty-five years old. The ecclesiastical processes that followed treated his death as martyrdom in odium fidei. Six other Recollects of the same house were killed in those same days: Vicente Soler, the prior of the community; León Inchausti; José Rada; José Ricardo Díez; Julián Benigno Moreno; and Vicente Pinilla. They are remembered collectively as the Martyrs of Motril. Their deaths form part of the much larger killing of bishops, priests, religious, and lay Catholics in the Republican zone during 1936–1939.
Pope John Paul II beatified Deogracias Palacios and his six companions on 7 March 1999 in Rome, in a ceremony that also included other Spanish Civil War martyrs. They have not been canonized. Their liturgical memory is associated with late July, the time of the principal martyrdoms at Motril. Devotion to them is maintained especially by the Order of Augustinian Recollects and in the local church of Granada. Palacios remains an obscure individual figure outside that collective witness: the surviving public record does not describe distinctive writings, offices beyond his priesthood in the Motril community, or a separate cult independent of the seven martyrs as a group.
