Biography

Short Description

Deusdedit (died 664), also rendered Adeodatus in Latin and known in some later medieval sources by the native name Frithona or Frithuwine, was the sixth Archbishop of Canterbury and the first English-born holder of that office. He belonged to the West Saxon people; neither the place nor the year of his birth is recorded in surviving sources. After the death of Archbishop Honorius on 30 September 653, the see of Canterbury remained vacant for more than a year. Deusdedit was consecrated on 26 March 655 by Ithamar, Bishop of Rochester, who was himself the first Englishman to occupy the Rochester see. The choice of a West Saxon for Canterbury, and his consecration by an English bishop rather than by a foreign missionary, marked a significant stage in the establishment of a native hierarchy a generation after the Gregorian mission from Rome.

Almost nothing is known of Deusdedit's activity as archbishop. Bede, whose Ecclesiastical History of the English People is the principal narrative source for seventh-century England, mentions him only briefly. Bede records that Deusdedit consecrated Damian to succeed Ithamar at Rochester, thereby maintaining an English succession in that diocese. No synods, letters, or charters issued by Deusdedit have survived, and Bede offers no assessment of his character or pastoral work. The great ecclesiastical controversy of the age—the conflict between Roman and Irish-Celtic customs, especially the dating of Easter—came to a head at the Synod of Whitby in 664. Bede does not name Deusdedit among those present, and the archbishop's death in July of the same year makes his participation uncertain. The silence of the sources has led historians to conclude that his episcopate left little mark on the documentary record, whether because of the brevity of his tenure, the disruption caused by plague, or simply the loss of archives.

In 664 a severe plague afflicted Britain and Ireland. Bede states that Deusdedit died on 14 July of that year, the same day as King Eorcenberht of Kent. The double death of the metropolitan and the Kentish king on a single day underscored the severity of the epidemic. The see of Canterbury then lay vacant until 668, when Theodore of Tarsus, a Greek monk sent from Rome, was consecrated archbishop and began a thorough reorganization of the English Church. Deusdedit was buried in the church of Saints Peter and Paul outside the walls of Canterbury, the monastery founded by Augustine and later known as St Augustine's Abbey, which served as the mausoleum of the early archbishops of Canterbury.

Deusdedit was honoured as a saint in the medieval English Church. His feast day is 14 July, the traditional date of his death. Because he lived long before the formal processes of canonization were established in the Western Church, he is a pre-congregation saint; no papal act of canonization is recorded. His relics remained at St Augustine's Abbey and were among those solemnly translated when the abbey church was rebuilt in the later eleventh century. Beyond Canterbury he did not acquire a widespread cult or a distinctive set of patronages. The paucity of contemporary information about him means that his historical importance rests chiefly on his status as the first native archbishop of Canterbury and on the chronological place he occupies between the Italian mission and the arrival of Theodore.
