Biography

Short Description

Pope Saint Deusdedit, known in later papal lists as Adeodatus I, was Bishop of Rome in the early seventh century. The Liber Pontificalis identifies him as a Roman by birth and as the son of a subdeacon named Stephen. No contemporary or near-contemporary source records the year of his birth, and any precise date would be conjecture. He belonged to the secular clergy of the Roman Church rather than to a monastic community, a point of note because several of his immediate predecessors, including Gregory the Great, had been monks. Nothing secure is known of his career as a priest before his election beyond his membership of the Roman presbyterate.

Deusdedit was consecrated pope on 19 October 615, succeeding Boniface IV. Italy in these years still formed part of the Byzantine imperial system, though imperial power in the peninsula was weak and the Lombards remained a constant political and military presence. Rome itself was impoverished and vulnerable. The Liber Pontificalis reports that a great earthquake occurred during his pontificate and that a severe epidemic of a disfiguring skin disease followed, so grave that the dead could scarcely be recognized. Such notices, though brief, indicate the hardship of urban life in early seventh-century Rome.

The documentary residue of his reign is slight. He is remembered as a pope who showed particular care for the Roman clergy. Later tradition has sometimes credited him with the introduction of leaden seals, or bullae, on papal documents, but that attribution is not firmly established by surviving originals and should be treated with caution. He performed the ordinary work of ordination, raising men to the priesthood, the diaconate, and the episcopate for a number of churches. No substantial collection of his letters has been preserved, in contrast to the large correspondence of Gregory I a generation earlier. His pontificate lasted a little more than three years.

Deusdedit died in Rome on 8 November 618 and was buried in the basilica of Saint Peter on the Vatican hill. After a vacancy, Boniface V was elected as his successor. Veneration of Deusdedit among the holy popes of Rome is ancient; the Roman Martyrology assigns his feast to 8 November. He was never the subject of a formal medieval or modern canonization process of the later type, and no well-documented list of specific patronages is attached to his name in the standard hagiographical sources.
