Biography

Short Description

Diadochos of Photiki (also called Diadochus of Photice or Photike) was a fifth-century Christian bishop, ascetic teacher, and Greek spiritual writer of the Eastern Roman Empire. He held the see of Photiki, a city in the province of Epirus Vetus in northwestern Greece, whose site is generally identified near modern Paramythia in Thesprotia. Almost nothing is known of his family, education, or early life, and no contemporary biography survives. He is securely placed in the mid-fifth century by his writings and by the association of his see with the church of Old Epirus in the age of the Council of Chalcedon (451). Precise years of birth and death are not preserved in reliable sources; later handbooks often offer conjectural dates around the fifth century, but those figures are estimates, not documented facts. There is no trustworthy evidence for his birthplace, the place of his death, or his burial.

As bishop he belonged to the Chalcedonian side in the Christological disputes that followed the councils of Ephesus and Chalcedon. His works reject both Nestorian and Monophysite extremes and contain a sustained argument against Messalianism (the Euchite movement), whose adherents taught that a demon still dwelt in the soul after baptism and could be driven out only by unceasing prayer. Diadochos held that baptism fully expels Satan and confers the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, while the baptized person remains subject to external demonic attack and must cooperate with grace through ascetic struggle. Little is recorded of his public career beyond this theological stance. A later and uncertain tradition connects him with Vandal raids on the Epirote coast and possible captivity in North Africa; that episode is not firmly established by contemporary evidence.

His principal work is the Hundred Chapters on Spiritual Perfection (also known as the Gnostic Chapters, or On Spiritual Knowledge and Discrimination), a century of short reflections on the contemplative life. In it he treats discernment of thoughts, grace and free will, the spiritual senses, warmth of the heart, and the invocation of the name of Jesus as a means of gathering the intellect. He is among the earliest Greek authors to recommend continuous recitation of a brief Jesus Prayer, and his teaching on watchfulness and inner stillness was later absorbed into the hesychast tradition. Two further pieces are commonly linked with his name: a homily on the Ascension of Christ and a short Vision or catechetical discourse; the authenticity of the latter has been debated. His Greek is that of a cultivated ecclesiastical writer, consistent with episcopal office rather than with a purely eremitical career.

The Hundred Chapters were widely copied in Byzantine monastic circles and entered the Philokalia compiled in the eighteenth century by Nikodemos the Hagiorite and Makarios of Corinth. Through that collection, and through earlier use by writers such as Maximus the Confessor, Diadochos became an important authority for Eastern Christian spirituality. He is venerated as a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church, where his memory is kept on 29 March. No reliable information survives about a spouse, children, membership in a later-style religious order, or a formal act of canonization of the medieval papal type; like most holy bishops of late antiquity, he entered the calendar through local and monastic commemoration.
