Biography

Short Description

Díchu (also spelled Dichu, Dichú, or Dícu), son of Trichim (Trichem), is remembered in early medieval Irish hagiography as a fifth-century chieftain of the Dál Fiatach in eastern Ulster, whose territory lay in Mag Inis (the Lecale peninsula) in what is now County Down. He is not attested in contemporary documents; almost everything reported of him comes from later Lives of Saint Patrick, above all the seventh-century Vita by Muirchú moccu Machtheni, the Collectanea of Tírechán, and the subsequent Tripartite Life of Patrick, together with Irish genealogical tracts that place him among the Dál Fiatach. No reliable source records his year of birth or death, and modern historians treat the conversion story as a traditional episode in the Patrick legend rather than as a recoverable biography.

According to that tradition, Patrick, after coming ashore in Díchu’s country near Strangford Lough, was at first met with hostility: Díchu intended to kill the missionary. On seeing Patrick, however, he was moved to faith, received baptism, and is described as the first of the Irish to believe in Patrick’s preaching. He then granted Patrick a barn (Irish saball) at the place thereafter called Saul (Sabhall Phádraig, “Patrick’s barn”). The barn is presented as the first church founded by Patrick in Ireland. Saul remained closely tied to the Patrician mission in Ulster; later legend held that Patrick returned there at the end of his life and died at Saul. Díchu thus functions in the Lives as the archetypal protective chieftain who opens a district to the church.

Beyond the conversion and the gift of the barn, little that can be verified is known. The sources do not name a spouse, children, or a religious order, nor do they state that Díchu himself entered monastic life, though later piety numbered him among the saints of Down. His cult was local, centred on Saul and the Patrician churches of that region, and he was not the subject of a formal papal canonization. Irish martyrologies commemorate him on 29 April (Dichu of Sabhall). Later medieval and early modern writers repeated the same conversion episode as part of the standard Patrick cycle and added few independent details. Díchu therefore remains an obscure but symbolically important figure: the first named Irish convert in the Patrician tradition, and the donor of the site that later memory treated as Patrick’s first church and last resting place in Ireland.
