Biography

Short Description

Dikran Chökürian (Armenian: Տիգրան Չէօկիւրեան) was an Armenian writer, teacher, and journalist of the late Ottoman period. He was born in 1884 in Gümüşhane, a town in the Pontic highlands of northeastern Anatolia, then within the Ottoman Empire. He belonged to the Western Armenian cultural world that had developed under Ottoman rule, with its network of schools, newspapers, and literary societies. After early schooling in local Armenian institutions, he studied at the Sanasarian College in Erzurum (Karin), one of the most important Armenian secondary schools of the empire, founded to train teachers and community leaders. The college’s curriculum combined Armenian language and history with modern subjects, and it sent graduates into teaching posts across Anatolia and into the intellectual life of Constantinople.

Following his studies, Chökürian worked as a teacher in Armenian schools, including in the Erzurum region, before moving to Constantinople, the center of Western Armenian letters and political debate. In the capital he taught and wrote, and he became editor of the newspaper Vostan. Through the press he took part in the public life of the Ottoman Armenian community in the years before the First World War. His literary work is associated with the realist tendency in Western Armenian prose; he published fiction and journalistic pieces that treated contemporary social themes. Because his career was brief, his surviving body of work is limited, and he is better known as a member of the generation of writers active in Constantinople than as the author of a large, fully catalogued oeuvre.

On 24 April 1915 Ottoman authorities in Constantinople arrested several hundred Armenian intellectuals, clergy, and community figures. Chökürian was among those seized in that roundup, which later came to mark the opening phase of the Armenian Genocide. Detainees were imprisoned in the capital and then sent into the interior, many toward Ayaş and Çankırı in central Anatolia. Chökürian was killed in 1915. The exact place and manner of his death are not firmly established in the surviving record, a common fate for deportees from the April arrests whose individual files were never completed.

Chökürian died in his early thirties, and details of his private life—marriage, children, and burial—are not documented in standard historical and encyclopedic sources. He is remembered in Armenian literary history as one of the writers and editors lost in 1915, and his name appears on commemorative lists of intellectuals murdered during the genocide. The destruction of people and archives in that year left many biographies of his generation incomplete; what can be stated with confidence is his origin in Gümüşhane, his education and teaching, his work on Vostan in Constantinople, and his death in the mass killing of Ottoman Armenian community leaders in 1915.
