Biography

Short Description

Dimitry of Rostov was born Daniil Savvich Tuptalo in December 1651 in Makariv, a town near Kiev in the Kiev Voivodeship of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. He came from a Cossack family; his father, Savva Grigorievich Tuptalo, served as a sotnik, a Cossack company officer. The mid-seventeenth-century Ukrainian lands in which he grew up were marked by war, shifting allegiances, and the religious pressures that followed the Khmelnytsky uprising. Daniil was educated at the Kiev Collegium, later known as the Kiev-Mohyla Academy, the principal Orthodox school of higher learning in the East Slavic world. There he studied theology, rhetoric, languages, and the liberal arts that shaped the Baroque clerical culture of the region.

In 1668 he was tonsured a monk with the name Dimitry at the Monastery of St. Cyril near Kiev. Still in his teens, he entered a life of preaching and monastic administration that took him through a succession of communities in Left-Bank Ukraine. He served as hieromonk and later as hegumen at monasteries associated with Chernihiv, Baturyn, and Novhorod-Siverskyi, and he spent a formative period at the Kiev Caves Lavra. His reputation as a preacher and as a learned writer grew during these decades, in a church still closely tied to Polish-Lithuanian and Cossack Hetmanate institutions even as Muscovite influence increased.

From the mid-1680s he devoted himself to compiling the Chet’i-Minei, a vast collection of saints’ lives arranged by the months of the church calendar. Drawing on Greek, Latin, Church Slavonic, and Polish sources, he produced a menologion that became the standard hagiographical reference of the Russian Orthodox Church. The work occupied him for more than twenty years and remains his principal literary monument. He also wrote sermons, liturgical texts, a cell chronicle, and other spiritual compositions, working in the learned Slavonic idiom of the Ukrainian and Russian clergy of his age.

In 1701 Tsar Peter I summoned him to Moscow and appointed him metropolitan of Siberia, with his intended see at Tobolsk. Ill health prevented the journey to Siberia, and in 1702 he was installed instead as metropolitan of Rostov and Yaroslavl. In Rostov he founded a Slavic-Greek school, preached against the Old Believer schism, and sought to raise the educational and pastoral level of the diocesan clergy during the era of Petrine reform. Among his writings from this period is a lengthy polemical investigation of Old Believer teaching known as the Rozysk. He continued to compose spiritual, homiletic, and dramatic works until the end of his life.

Dimitry died in Rostov on 28 October 1709 and was buried in the church of the Conception of St. Anna at the Saviour-St. James (Spaso-Yakovlevsky) Monastery. In 1752 his relics were uncovered and described as incorrupt. The Russian Orthodox Church glorified him as a saint in 1757. His principal feast is kept on 28 October, the day of his repose, with further commemorations on 21 September for the uncovering of the relics and on 23 May among the saints of Rostov. He is remembered as a hierarch, hagiographer, and spiritual writer whose lives of the saints shaped Orthodox devotion across the East Slavic world for generations.
