Biography

Short Description

Dimitry Prilutsky, known in English as Demetrius of Priluki and in Russian as Dimitrii Prilutskii, was a fourteenth-century monk and abbot of the Russian Orthodox Church, later venerated as a saint and wonderworker. He was born in the town of Pereyaslavl-Zalessky (modern Pereslavl-Zalessky), northeast of Moscow, into a wealthy merchant family. The precise year of his birth is not recorded in the surviving sources. Attracted to the ascetic life, he entered the Goritsky Monastery of the Dormition at Pereyaslavl, where he received the monastic tonsure. Contemporary and later accounts describe him as tall in stature, strict in fasting and prayer, and notable for humility, including the wearing of poor and patched clothing despite his family’s means.

After a period at Goritsky he founded a monastery dedicated to Saint Nicholas on the shore of Lake Pleshcheyevo, remaining there as abbot. His reputation for holiness drew disciples and lay visitors, which, according to the traditional Life, led him to seek a more secluded place. Hagiographical tradition presents him as a spiritual contemporary and associate of Saint Sergius of Radonezh; some accounts state that he consulted Sergius and received a blessing before leaving the Pereyaslavl region. Accompanied by his disciple Pachomius, he traveled into the northern forest lands around Vologda.

In 1371 Dimitry established a monastery in honor of the All-Merciful Savior at a bend of the Vologda River, a site that gave the house its later name, the Spaso-Prilutsky Monastery. The foundation belonged to the wave of cenobitic monasteries associated with the influence of Saint Sergius in Muscovite Rus'. Grand Prince Dmitry Ivanovich, later known as Donskoy, is recorded as a patron of the new community. As first abbot, Dimitry organized communal life, emphasized poverty and obedience, and became known for pastoral care of the brethren and of local people. Stories preserved in his Life attribute to him gifts of spiritual insight and miraculous help.

He died at the monastery on 11 February 1392 and was buried within it. Local veneration began after his death; his relics were subsequently uncovered and he was commemorated as a wonderworker. The Russian Orthodox Church keeps his principal feast on 11 February and also remembers the uncovering of his relics. He is closely associated with the city and region of Vologda and with the Spaso-Prilutsky Monastery, which remained an important northern Russian monastic center. Icons of the saint, including well-known later Muscovite examples, formed part of his cult. No reliable evidence indicates that he married or had children; his documented adult life was that of a monk and abbot.
