Biography

Short Description

Dionisy of Radonezh, known in the world as David Fyodorovich Zobninovsky, was born in 1570 in the town of Rzhev in the Tsardom of Russia. He entered the Dormition Monastery at Staritsa, where he received the monastic tonsure and the name Dionisy. There he was formed in the Orthodox monastic tradition and in the learning of Church Slavonic letters, and in time he served as abbot of that house. His reputation for piety, administrative competence, and literacy led to his transfer to the foremost monastery of Muscovite Russia.

In 1610 Dionisy was appointed archimandrite of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, the community founded in the fourteenth century by Saint Sergius of Radonezh. He took office immediately after the sixteen-month Polish-Lithuanian siege of the monastery (1608–1610) during the Time of Troubles. As archimandrite he oversaw the spiritual and material recovery of the lavra and composed exhortatory letters that were copied and circulated widely. Those appeals called the Russian people to repentance, unity, and armed resistance against foreign occupation, and they helped rally support for the Second Volunteer Army of Kuzma Minin and Prince Dmitry Pozharsky, which liberated Moscow in 1612.

After the accession of the Romanov dynasty, Dionisy took a leading part in the correction of Church Slavonic liturgical books, work intended to remove copyists’ errors that had accumulated in manuscript and early printed service books. Certain of the readings he and his collaborators adopted—most notably the omission of the phrase “and by fire” from a prayer for the blessing of water—were condemned as heretical by a church council in 1618. Dionisy was defrocked, beaten, and imprisoned. His rehabilitation followed the visit of Patriarch Theophanes of Jerusalem to Moscow in 1619 and a subsequent review of the case; he was restored to his rank and returned to the Trinity-Sergius Monastery.

In his later years Dionisy lived as an ascetic and spiritual father at the lavra, continuing scholarly and pastoral labors. He died on 10 May 1633 and was buried at the Trinity-Sergius Lavra. Local veneration arose at the monastery and among the saints associated with Radonezh. The Russian Orthodox Church commemorates him on 12 May (Julian calendar) and on 6 July in the Synaxis of the Saints of Radonezh. His life is attested in contemporary chronicles, the records of the early-seventeenth-century book-correction controversy, and later hagiographical accounts of the lavra.
