Biography

Short Description

Saint Dionysios of Zakynthos, known in the world as Draganigos Sigouros, was born in 1547 on the island of Zakynthos in the Ionian Sea, then under the rule of the Republic of Venice. He belonged to the local noble family of Sigouros and was given a careful Christian upbringing together with a substantial education in letters and theology. Sources describe him as learned in Greek, Latin, and Italian. After the death of his parents he disposed of his inheritance and entered monastic life rather than remaining in the secular career open to a man of his rank.

He was tonsured a monk with the name Dionysios at the monastery of the Theotokos on the Strofades, a pair of small islands south of Zakynthos, and was later ordained deacon and priest. In the later sixteenth century he was consecrated Archbishop of Aegina. He administered that see for a period, but he did not remain in episcopal office for the rest of his life. Preferring the monastic state, he resigned the archbishopric and returned to the Ionian Islands, living again as a monk and spiritual father on Zakynthos and at the Strofades.

The episode that most shaped his later cult is the pardon of his brother’s murderer. According to the received hagiographical account, a man who had killed Dionysios’s brother took refuge at the monastery, not knowing who the abbot was. Dionysios hid the fugitive, helped him to escape, and only afterward made known that he had recognized the crime and had chosen to forgive it. The story was remembered as a striking example of evangelical mercy and became inseparable from his reputation among the islanders.

Dionysios spent his last years as abbot of the Strofades monastery and died there on 17 December 1622. His body was reported to be incorrupt, and healings and other wonders were attributed to his relics. In the early eighteenth century, after an attack on the Strofades monastery, the relics were brought to the town of Zakynthos, where they are still enshrined in the church dedicated to him. He is venerated in the Eastern Orthodox Church as the patron saint of Zakynthos. His principal feast is 17 December; the translation of his relics is also commemorated, commonly on 24 August. He lived as a celibate monk and bishop, was never married, and held neither the papacy nor a patriarchal see.
