Biography

Short Description

Dionysius was bishop of Milan in the mid-fourth century, during the reign of the emperor Constantius II and at the height of the Arian controversy in the Western Roman Empire. Virtually nothing is recorded about his family, place of birth, or career before his elevation to the episcopate. He succeeded Eustorgius I as bishop of Milan in 349. Milan was then a major imperial residence and one of the most important sees in northern Italy, so its bishop held considerable ecclesiastical and civic standing. The historical sources that mention Dionysius are concerned almost entirely with the crisis that ended his tenure, not with his earlier life or pastoral work.

In 355 Constantius II summoned a council to Milan with the aim of forcing Western bishops to condemn Athanasius of Alexandria, the leading Nicene opponent of Arian theology. Imperial pressure on the assembled bishops was intense. Dionysius, together with Eusebius of Vercelli and Lucifer of Cagliari, resisted the demand to subscribe against Athanasius. He was deposed from his see for this refusal and sent into exile in the East, most often described as Cappadocia, though some traditions mention Armenia. An Arian cleric named Auxentius was installed as bishop of Milan in his place and occupied the see for nearly two decades. Dionysius never recovered his church and never returned to Italy.

He died in exile some years after his banishment. The year of his death is not known with documentary precision but is traditionally placed around 360. After Auxentius died in 374, the see of Milan passed to Ambrose. Ambrose arranged for the relics of Dionysius to be brought back from the East to Milan, an act recalled in the Roman Martyrology, which states that his sacred body was sent to his church by blessed Ambrose. A basilica in Milan dedicated to him, San Dionigi, became associated with his cult; that church was demolished in 1783. The sparse narrative of his exile and the later translation of his relics form almost the whole of the recoverable historical record.

Dionysius is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church and in the Eastern Orthodox Church. His feast day is 25 May. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him as a bishop who, for the Catholic faith, was banished to Cappadocia by the Arian emperor Constantius and there, renowned for his merits, rested in peace. Beyond this liturgical commemoration and the outline of the Council of Milan, his deposition, and the return of his relics, details of his origins, inner life, and the precise circumstances of his death remain unknown.
