Biography

Short Description

Diran Kelekian was an Ottoman Armenian journalist, editor, lexicographer, and university teacher, born in 1862 in Kayseri (also known in Armenian as Gesaria or Cesarea) in central Anatolia. He came from the Armenian community of that region and received a multilingual education that fitted him for work across Armenian, Ottoman Turkish, and European letters. After early schooling in the empire he continued his studies in France, including a period in Marseille, and gained a strong command of French as well as Turkish and Armenian. That linguistic range later supported both his newspaper career and his scholarly publications in Constantinople.

In the Ottoman capital he became one of the better-known Armenian publicists of the late imperial press. He edited the newspaper Cihan and was closely associated with Sabah, among the leading Turkish-language dailies of the city. He wrote on politics, culture, and current affairs and was widely regarded as a moderate who kept contacts with Ottoman officialdom and with the Committee of Union and Progress. Alongside journalism he taught at the imperial university, Darülfünun (later Istanbul University), and thus took part in higher education in the capital in the early twentieth century. He also produced a substantial French–Turkish dictionary that was used by students, journalists, and officials and that reflected the bilingual intellectual world of late Ottoman Constantinople.

His career illustrated how Armenian intellectuals participated in the empire’s Turkish-language public sphere even as communal tensions and nationalist politics sharpened after the 1908 Young Turk revolution and the Balkan Wars. On 24 April 1915, at the start of the round-up of the Armenian elite of Constantinople that opened the Armenian Genocide, Kelekian was arrested with scores of other Armenian writers, clergy, and community leaders. He was deported from the capital to the interior with the group sent toward Çankırı. Despite earlier connections with Ottoman authorities he was not spared. Later in 1915 he was taken from internment and killed in Anatolia; the precise site of the murder is not established with complete certainty in the surviving record, though accounts place his death in the Ottoman interior during the deportations.

Kelekian is remembered among the Armenian intellectuals of 1915 whose arrest and murder were intended to destroy Armenian civic and cultural life in the Ottoman Empire. His newspapers, teaching, and dictionary belong to the late Ottoman Armenian contribution to journalism and scholarship in Constantinople; his death is documented as part of the genocide that ended that milieu.
