Biography

Short Description

Dmitar Nemanjić (also rendered Dimitrije Nemanjić) was a thirteenth-century Serbian prince and magnate of the Nemanjić dynasty, the ruling house of medieval Serbia. He was a son of Vukan Nemanjić, who had been Grand Prince of Serbia and ruler of Zeta, and therefore a grandson of Stefan Nemanja, founder of the dynasty and of the unified Serbian state in the late twelfth century. Dmitar belonged to the cadet branch descending from Vukan, often called the Vukanović line of the Nemanjići, which retained standing in the Serbian lands after Vukan’s struggle with his brother Stefan the First-Crowned in the first years of the thirteenth century. His brothers included Đorđe Nemanjić, who ruled in Zeta (Duklja). No reliable source records the year or place of Dmitar’s birth or death; he is securely attested only in the period from 1271 into the mid-1280s.

In 1271 he is named in a contemporary document as Dmitar, son of Grand Prince Vukan, and he held the title of župan, a high comital rank in the Serbian medieval hierarchy. He appears as a regional lord in the valley of the Lim (Polimlje), in the southwestern part of the Serbian kingdom, a zone of strategic importance between Raška and the Adriatic hinterland. His public life fell under King Stefan Uroš I and, after 1276, King Stefan Dragutin, in a realm that had been a kingdom since 1217 and possessed an autocephalous Church. The evidence does not present him as a rival for the crown, but as a member of the wider dynasty exercising local authority and later turning to monastic patronage.

Later in life Dmitar took Orthodox monastic vows under the name David. As the monk David he is best known as ktitor (founder) of the Monastery of Davidovica, associated with Brodarevo on the Lim. In 1281 he contracted masons from the Adriatic commune of Dubrovnik (Ragusa) to build the monastery church, dedicated to the Baptism of Christ (the Theophany). That contract documents artistic and commercial ties between the Serbian interior and the Dalmatian coast. Davidovica is the principal monument linked to his name and belongs to late thirteenth-century Serbian ecclesiastical architecture. He is last clearly attested around 1286. Neither the place of his death nor a documented burial site is established; a connection with his foundation is sometimes assumed without firm proof.

Dmitar had at least one son, Vratislav, through whom the Vukanović-Nemanjić line continued. Vratislav’s son was Vratko Nemanjić, a later Serbian magnate remembered in epic tradition as Jug Bogdan. Vratko’s daughter Milica married Prince Lazar Hrebeljanović, lord of Moravian Serbia, who died at the Battle of Kosovo in 1389; as princess she became a major political and religious figure and was later venerated as a saint. Through this descent Dmitar is an ancestor of the Lazarević house and of several important figures of late medieval Serbia. The genealogy, drawn from later charters and historiographical tradition, is the main reason his sparsely documented life remains significant for dynastic history.

Because contemporary narrative histories say little about him, knowledge of Dmitar Nemanjić rests on brief documentary mentions, the 1281 building contract, and later genealogical notices. He was neither bishop nor patriarch, and he is not counted among the canonized saints of the Nemanjić house, unlike his grandfather Stefan Nemanja (Saint Simeon) and his great-uncle Saint Sava. His importance lies in his place in the dynasty, his role as a regional župan, and his monastic foundation at Davidovica, long a marker of Nemanjić piety in Polimlje. Uncertainties remain about his exact lifespan, the name of his wife, and the full extent of his estates. What can be said with confidence is confined to the attestations of 1271–1286, his parentage, his monastic name David, the founding of Davidovica in 1281, and his documented son Vratislav.
