Biography

Short Description

The name Dmitry Lebedev (also spelled Dimitry or Dimitri Lebedev) is a common Russian one and is borne by more than one historical person, including parish clergy of the Russian Orthodox Church. The Wikidata identifier Q47453319 does not correspond, in standard encyclopedic or hagiographical works that can be checked from training knowledge, to a universally known medieval saint, a pope, or a patriarch. Without a single, clearly sourced vita that can be matched to this identifier, a careful historian cannot assign a birth year, death year, or places of birth, death, or burial without risk of conflating distinct men of the same name. Those fields are therefore left blank.

Among Orthodox clergy of this surname, at least one priest Dmitry Lebedev appears in twentieth-century lists of victims of Soviet repression and in compilations of the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia. Such priests generally belonged to the parish clergy of the late Russian Empire, received a seminary education, and continued liturgical and pastoral work after 1917 until arrested during the mass operations of the 1930s. A number of clergy so named were executed in 1937, including at sites such as the Butovo firing range near Moscow, where thousands were shot and buried in unmarked graves. The Russian Orthodox Church glorified a large host of these sufferers at the Jubilee Bishops’ Council of 2000. Investigation files, when they survive, often supply the only biographical data, and those files are not always published in full or unambiguously linked to a given database record.

No religious order, named spouse, children, individual feast day, or patronage can be confirmed for this specific subject without speculation. He did not hold the see of Rome or the Coptic patriarchate of Alexandria, nor the office of Patriarch or Catholicos of any Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, or Church of the East church. Russian parish priests of the imperial period were typically married before ordination, but that general rule is not the same as documented evidence of a spouse or children for this person, so those fields remain empty.

The wider setting is the persecution of the Russian Church in the 1920s and 1930s, when very large numbers of clergy and believers were imprisoned or killed. Research on the New Martyrs is still in progress; archival publications continue to appear and identifications are sometimes revised. Until a clearly sourced biography can be tied to Q47453319, the responsible course is to record the limits of present knowledge rather than to construct a continuous life from analogous cases or from an office-taking date.
