Biography

Domenico Tuoc, known in Vietnamese as Đaminh Tuốc, was a Catholic martyr from Tonkin in northern Vietnam during the nineteenth century. He was born in the village of Trung Le in the Nam Dinh region, in a period when Spanish Dominican missionaries had established a significant Catholic presence in the Red River Delta. Tuoc became a member of the Third Order of Saint Dominic, living as a lay tertiary and serving as a catechist who instructed others in the Christian faith amid a society where Catholicism remained a minority religion often viewed with suspicion by the imperial court.

In the 1830s, Emperor Minh Mang of the Nguyen dynasty issued harsh edicts against Christianity, mandating that believers recant by trampling on the crucifix and threatening severe penalties including imprisonment, torture, and death for those who refused. As a known Christian and catechist, Tuoc was arrested during this wave of persecution. Historical accounts indicate that he remained steadfast in his faith despite interrogation and physical suffering. He died in prison in Nam Dinh in 1839 from the effects of torture and harsh confinement, and is therefore counted among the martyrs who refused to apostatize.

Tuoc was among the large number of Vietnamese Catholics beatified by Pope Leo XIII on 27 May 1900. These beatifications recognized martyrs from the persecutions in Tonkin, Annam, and Cochinchina. Nearly a century later, on 19 June 1988, Pope John Paul II canonized Tuoc together with 116 companions as the Martyrs of Vietnam, also known as Saint Andrew Dung-Lac and Companions. Their collective feast day is observed on 24 November in the General Roman Calendar.

Surviving biographical details about Domenico Tuoc are limited, as is common for many of the Vietnamese martyrs whose lives were recorded primarily in the context of their passion and death rather than in extensive vitae. Contemporary missionary reports and later hagiographical compilations preserve his identity as a Dominican tertiary and the circumstances of his martyrdom, but little is documented concerning his family background, occupation beyond catechesis, or the specific events of his earlier life. He is venerated as one of the witnesses from the Vietnamese Church who testified to the faith under imperial persecution in the nineteenth century.
