Biography

Short Description

Saint Domice of Amiens, known in Latin as Domitius and in French as Domice d'Amiens, was a priest and hermit venerated in the diocese of Amiens in Picardy. No contemporary record of his life survives. What is known comes from later medieval hagiography and from the local cult that grew up around his memory at Saint-Acheul, on the southeastern edge of Amiens. Tradition places him in the eighth century and identifies him as the spiritual director of Saint Ulphe (also called Ulphia or Wulfe), a recluse of the same countryside. Because the written lives were composed long after the period they describe, historians treat the biographical details with caution: his existence as a local holy man is plausible, but his precise dates, family, and place of birth cannot be established from early sources. Claims that he was a Roman of noble birth belong to the conventional language of medieval vitae rather than to documented fact.

According to that later legend, Domice was a priest who withdrew to solitude in the marshes and wooded ground near Saint-Acheul, a site already charged with Christian memory as a Gallo-Roman burial area and as a place associated with the earliest bishops of Amiens. There he lived in a hermitage, celebrating the sacraments and practising asceticism. Ulphe, a young woman of a noble family from nearby Fouencamps, wished to live as a recluse. Domice is said to have received her, formed her in the eremitical life, and settled her in a separate cell a short distance from his own, so that each might keep solitude while he remained her confessor and guide. The arrangement matches a pattern found elsewhere in early medieval Gaul, in which a priest-hermit provided pastoral care to female recluses without a formal monastic enclosure.

The episode that most firmly fixed the pair in Picard folklore concerns the frogs of the Somme wetlands. Ulphe, unable to pray because of their croaking, complained to Domice. He told her to command the frogs in God's name to be silent; they obeyed. Local tradition long held that frogs in that particular place remained quiet thereafter, or that only a single frog was afterwards allowed to croak as a memorial of the miracle. The story belongs to a wider family of saints' legends in which nature is stilled for prayer, and it became a favourite motif in later images of the two saints.

Domice was buried at Saint-Acheul, where his tomb, together with that of Ulphe, drew pilgrims. Regular canons later established at Saint-Acheul promoted the cult and preserved relics attributed to him. He never entered the universal calendar on the same footing as the great missionary bishops of Gaul, but he kept a stable place in the proper of the diocese of Amiens, where his feast has traditionally been kept on 23 October. He is not recorded as bishop, patriarch, or pope. The sources present him as a celibate priest-hermit, without spouse or children, and they attach him to no named religious order. No reliable source supplies a year of birth or of death.
