Biography

Short Description

Dominguito del Val, also called Santo Dominguito del Val, is a figure of later medieval and early modern Aragonese hagiography associated with Zaragoza in the Crown of Aragon. Traditional accounts place his death in 1250 and describe him as a young choirboy or acolyte of the Cathedral of the Savior (La Seo). No thirteenth-century chronicle, notarial record, or royal document has been shown to attest his existence, his family, or a homicide matching the later story. Modern historians therefore treat him as a legendary child-martyr rather than as a person whose life can be reconstructed from contemporary evidence. The tale belongs to the European blood-libel tradition, in which Jewish communities were falsely accused of kidnapping and ritually killing Christian children.

In the received legend he was about seven years old and served at the cathedral. He is said to have been lured away, taken into the Jewish quarter or a hidden place, and crucified in imitation of the Passion. His body was then supposedly recovered and became the focus of miracles. Names of alleged perpetrators and other narrative details appear only in much later retellings and are not consistent from one version to another. The plot closely resembles other well-known ritual-murder legends, including those of William of Norwich in the twelfth century and Hugh of Lincoln in the mid-thirteenth. Written forms of the Zaragoza story are not securely attested until centuries after 1250, which strongly suggests literary and homiletic construction rather than reportage of a documented crime.

A local cult nonetheless took root in Zaragoza. A chapel of Santo Dominguito del Val was fitted out in La Seo, with an image of the crucified child and objects presented as relics. The feast was kept locally, commonly on 31 August. Veneration remained diocesan: there was no papal canonization in the modern, documentary sense, and the figure never acquired the standing of a universally recognized saint in the Roman Martyrology. Early modern printed hagiography, cathedral liturgy, and furnishings fixed the legend in civic memory and tied it to anti-Jewish polemic in the Crown of Aragon and later in Habsburg Spain.

From the later twentieth century the cult was judged historically baseless and injurious. After the Second Vatican Council and the declaration Nostra Aetate (1965), church authorities in Zaragoza curtailed public devotion; the cathedral chapel lost its former role, and the story ceased to be taught as fact. Scholarship stresses that there is no reliable evidence that a child of this name was murdered in 1250, and none that Jews of Zaragoza committed such an act. Dominguito del Val is now studied chiefly as an example of how ritual-murder legends were localized, given liturgical form, and eventually set aside in the Latin West.
