Biography

Short Description

Dominic Bùi Văn Úy, known in Vietnamese as Đaminh Bùi Văn Úy, was a Catholic lay catechist and martyr of nineteenth-century northern Vietnam. He was born in 1812 in the village of Quần Anh Hạ, in Nam Định province in the Red River Delta, then under the Nguyễn dynasty (the region European missionaries called Tonkin). The area already had a Catholic population going back to the seventeenth century. He received the baptismal name Dominic and was raised in that community. As a young man he became a thầy giảng, or catechist. In the Vietnamese Church of the period, catechists were laymen who taught doctrine, prepared people for the sacraments, assisted missionary priests, and often led village congregations when clergy were scarce or in hiding.

During the reign of Emperor Minh Mạng (1820–1841) the court issued edicts that ordered churches destroyed, foreign missionaries expelled or killed, and Vietnamese Catholics forced to recant, typically by trampling a crucifix. Those who refused faced prison, torture, exile, or death. Dominic continued his work as a catechist in the Nam Định region under those conditions. Surviving notices of his life are brief, as is true for many of the lesser-known Vietnamese martyrs, whose records come mainly from later beatification processes rather than from full contemporary biographies. He was arrested in the late 1830s, most likely in 1838 or early 1839, and imprisoned at Nam Định.

In prison he was interrogated and tortured in an attempt to make him abandon the faith. Descriptions of the Minh Mạng persecutions commonly mention the cangue, beatings, and prolonged detention in severe conditions. He did not apostatize. He died in the Nam Định prison on 19 July 1839, at about twenty-seven years of age, from wounds and the effects of confinement rather than by public execution. He is therefore counted among the Vietnamese Catholics who died in jail during that persecution. Local Catholics later preserved his memory as a martyr.

He is one of the 117 Martyrs of Vietnam (Andrew Dũng-Lạc and Companions), a group that includes 96 Vietnamese, 11 Spanish Dominicans, and 10 French missionaries. A group of sixty-four Vietnamese martyrs, among whom he is included, was beatified by Pope Leo XIII on 27 May 1900. Pope John Paul II canonized the 117 together on 19 June 1988 in Rome. Their common feast in the General Roman Calendar is 24 November. Dominic is venerated especially in the Diocese of Bùi Chu, which includes his native district. Beyond the facts of his birth, his role as a catechist, his imprisonment, and his death for the faith, detailed personal information is not securely attested.
