Biography

Short Description

Dominic de la Calzada, known in Spanish as Santo Domingo de la Calzada, was an eleventh-century hermit and builder whose work along the Camino de Santiago gave rise to the town that still bears his name in La Rioja. Traditional accounts place his birth in 1019 at Viloria de Rioja, a village in what is now the province of Burgos, to a peasant family. Later sources name his father as Ximeno García and his mother as Orodulce. As a young man he sought admission to the Benedictine monastery of San Millán de la Cogolla, one of the principal religious houses of the Rioja, but was refused. According to the hagiographical tradition he was turned away because he was considered insufficiently educated or otherwise unsuitable for monastic life. He then withdrew to solitude in the wooded country near the River Oja, where he is said to have lived for a time under the direction of an older hermit named Gregory.

After Gregory's death, Dominic devoted himself to the practical assistance of pilgrims traveling the French Way toward Santiago de Compostela. The stretch of road through the marshy, forested valley of the Oja was difficult and dangerous. Dominic cleared woodland, laid a paved causeway (the calzada from which he takes his epithet), and constructed a bridge over the river so that travelers would no longer have to ford it. He also built a hospice where pilgrims could rest and receive care. These works, undertaken in the later eleventh century, attracted the notice and support of King Alfonso VI of León and Castile, who favored the development of the pilgrimage route. A settlement grew up around Dominic's hermitage, bridge, hospital, and church, and it became known as Santo Domingo de la Calzada.

Dominic died on 12 May 1109 and was buried in the church he had founded. The town continued to expand after his death, and his tomb became a station on the Camino. In the twelfth century a Romanesque church rose over his grave; it was later rebuilt as a Gothic cathedral, which still houses his remains. A well-known miracle story, attached to his cult rather than to events of his lifetime, tells of a German pilgrim wrongly hanged for theft who was found still alive on the gallows. When the pilgrim's parents reported this to the local magistrate, who was at table, the magistrate declared that the youth was no more alive than the roasted cock and hen on his plate, whereupon the birds stood up and crowed. Live chickens have long been kept in the cathedral in memory of the legend, and the saint's iconography often includes a rooster and a hen as well as a bridge or a stretch of road.

Veneration of Dominic spread along the pilgrimage road and in Castile. His feast is kept on 12 May, the traditional date of his death. He is invoked as patron of the town of Santo Domingo de la Calzada and, in Spain, of civil engineers, whose work of roads and bridges recalls his own. He lived as a hermit rather than as a member of a formal religious order. His sanctity was that of a man whose charity took the form of infrastructure for the poor and the pilgrim. Formal papal canonization in the later medieval sense is not clearly documented, but his cult was established locally from the twelfth century and has continued without interruption in the Roman Catholic Church.
