Biography

Short Description

Dominic Đinh Đạt, known in Vietnamese as Đaminh Đinh Đạt, was a nineteenth-century Vietnamese Catholic layman who died as a martyr during the persecutions ordered by Emperor Minh Mạng of the Nguyễn dynasty. He was born in 1803 in Phú Nhai, a village in Nam Định province in Tonkin, northern Vietnam. Phú Nhai belonged to a part of the Red River Delta where Catholic communities had taken root from the seventeenth century onward through the work of Jesuit, Dominican, and later Paris Foreign Missions Society clergy. Đinh Đạt served as a soldier in the imperial army. His baptismal name, Dominic, reflects the widespread custom among Vietnamese Catholics of taking the name of a saint at baptism; it does not by itself indicate membership in the Dominican Order.

In the 1830s Minh Mạng, who reigned from 1820 to 1841, issued edicts that treated Christianity as a heterodox and politically dangerous teaching. Christians were required to recant, typically by trampling on a crucifix, and those who refused were subject to arrest, confiscation of property, torture, and capital punishment. Soldiers and officials who were discovered to be Christian were regarded as especially suspect because of their place in the state's military and administrative apparatus. According to the traditions preserved in the causes for beatification, Dominic Đinh Đạt was identified as a Christian, refused to apostatize, and was imprisoned.

He was executed by beheading on 18 July 1839 at Nam Định. Beheading was a common form of capital punishment for those condemned in these religious trials. His martyrdom occurred in the same period that saw the deaths of numerous other Vietnamese laypeople, catechists, and clergy, as well as foreign missionaries, in Tonkin. Surviving accounts of his life are brief. They consistently identify him as a soldier from Phú Nhai and a martyr of 1839, but they do not preserve a detailed record of his family circumstances, education, or the precise course of his trial. Whether he was married or had children is not established in the standard martyrological sources.

Pope Leo XIII beatified Dominic Đinh Đạt on 27 May 1900 together with a large group of martyrs of Tonkin and Annam whose dossiers had been prepared by missionary congregations. On 19 June 1988 Pope John Paul II canonized him among the 117 Martyrs of Vietnam, a group that includes 96 Vietnamese, 11 Spanish Dominicans, and 10 French missionaries who died between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The Catholic Church commemorates these martyrs collectively on 24 November. Dominic Đinh Đạt remains one of the less fully documented of the Vietnamese lay martyrs; the historical record is sufficient to place his origin, occupation, and death, but not to reconstruct a full personal biography.
