Biography

Short Description

Dominic Ninh (Vietnamese: Đaminh Ninh) was a Roman Catholic layman who suffered martyrdom in Vietnam during the nineteenth century. He is numbered among the 117 Martyrs of Vietnam, the group of foreign missionaries, Vietnamese clergy, catechists, and lay faithful killed for the Christian faith between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries. The largest number of these deaths took place in the 1800s under the Nguyễn dynasty, especially during the reign of Emperor Minh Mạng (1820–1841), whose edicts treated Christianity as a threat to Confucian order and imperial authority and prescribed severe penalties for those who would not apostatize.

Reliable, detailed records of Dominic Ninh’s early life, family, and occupation are sparse, as is typical for many of the lay martyrs of this period. Their stories were preserved chiefly through missionary correspondence, local oral tradition, and later hagiographical summaries rather than extensive contemporary biographies. He is understood to have been a native of northern Vietnam (Tonkin). Like other Vietnamese Catholics of his generation, he would have practiced the faith under conditions of secrecy and danger, gathering when possible for the sacraments while living with the constant risk of denunciation. The baptismal name Dominic was common among Vietnamese Catholics and reflected the long presence of Dominican and other missionary activity in the country; it does not by itself indicate membership in a religious order.

During one of the systematic anti-Christian campaigns of the era, Dominic Ninh was arrested and required to renounce his faith, customarily by treading on a crucifix or otherwise demonstrating apostasy. He refused. The persecutions of this time employed imprisonment, beatings, caging, exposure, strangulation, and beheading. He died as a consequence of the sufferings inflicted for remaining steadfast. Precise circumstances of his arrest, the exact method of his death, and the day on which he died are not uniformly or independently documented in the summary accounts that have circulated in Western languages, and should not be stated with false precision.

Dominic Ninh was included among the companions of Saint Andrew Dũng-Lạc and was canonized by Pope John Paul II in Rome on 19 June 1988. The canonization recognized bishops, priests, religious, catechists, and ordinary lay men and women who had been killed in Vietnam rather than deny Christ. The liturgical commemoration of the Vietnamese Martyrs is kept on 24 November. Collectively they are invoked as patrons of Vietnam. Distinct individual feast days, burial sites, or special patronages attached to Dominic Ninh alone are not securely recorded apart from his place in this group.
