Biography
Dominik Hà Trọng Mậu, also known as Đaminh Hà Trọng Mậu, was a Vietnamese Roman Catholic priest of the Order of Preachers who was martyred in the mid-nineteenth century during the Nguyễn-dynasty persecutions of Christians. He was born in 1818 in the village of Quần Anh in Nam Định province in Tonkin, northern Vietnam. The area had long been a center of Dominican missionary work under the Spanish Province of the Holy Rosary, and a Catholic community persisted there through successive royal edicts against Christianity issued from the reign of Emperor Minh Mạng onward. Raised in that milieu, he entered the Dominican Order as a young man, completed the required studies, and was ordained to the priesthood.
As a native priest he served Catholic villages in the Nam Định region, celebrating the sacraments, instructing catechumens, and supporting the faithful when foreign missionaries were expelled or killed. Native clergy were essential to the survival of the Church in Tonkin because they could move among the people with less immediate notice than Europeans. His ministry unfolded against a background of legal prohibition, social pressure, and intermittent violence directed at those who refused to recant.
Under Emperor Tự Đức the anti-Christian campaign intensified in 1857–1858, partly in reaction to French military advances. Catholics were ordered to apostatize by trampling a crucifix. Father Hà Trọng Mậu was arrested in 1858, interrogated, and pressed to deny the faith. He refused. Condemned to death, he was beheaded on 5 November 1858 at Nam Định. His execution belonged to a larger wave of killings of clergy and laity in northern Vietnam in those years.
Local Catholics and Dominican chroniclers preserved the memory of his martyrdom. He was beatified in the early twentieth century among groups of Vietnamese martyrs and was canonized on 19 June 1988 by Pope John Paul II together with 116 companions, collectively venerated as Saint Andrew Dũng-Lạc and Companions. Their common liturgical feast is 24 November. They are honored as patrons of Vietnam. Dominik Hà Trọng Mậu is remembered as a pastor who remained with his people and sealed his priesthood by death rather than apostasy.
