Biography

Short Description

Dominik Nguyễn Văn Xuyên, known in Latin and Western hagiography as Dominic Nguyen Van Xuyen and in Vietnamese as Đaminh Nguyễn Văn Xuyên, was a Vietnamese Catholic priest of the Order of Preachers who died as a martyr in the nineteenth century. He was born in 1786 in the Catholic communities of northern Vietnam, in the Tonkin region of the Red River Delta, where Dominican missionaries had been active since the seventeenth century. He entered the Dominican Order, was ordained a priest, and spent his ministry serving Vietnamese Christians under conditions that grew steadily more dangerous as the Nguyễn court turned against Christianity.

During the reign of Emperor Minh Mạng, edicts were issued that treated the Christian religion as a foreign and politically suspect cult. Vietnamese and European clergy were hunted, churches were destroyed, and the faithful were ordered to trample the cross as a sign of apostasy. Dominic Nguyễn Văn Xuyên continued his pastoral work in this climate. In 1838 he was arrested, imprisoned, and subjected to interrogation and torture intended to force him to recant. Contemporary accounts of the Tonkin martyrs of that year describe Dominican priests who refused to apostatize and were therefore condemned to death.

He was executed by beheading on 26 November 1838. His death belongs to a concentrated wave of martyrdoms in 1838 that also claimed other Dominican missionaries and Vietnamese clergy and laity in the same region. The Church later grouped him with the Martyrs of Vietnam. He was beatified by Pope Leo XIII on 27 May 1900 among a large group of Vietnamese martyrs, and he was canonized by Pope John Paul II on 19 June 1988 together with 116 companions. The 117 are commemorated together on 24 November in the General Roman Calendar.

Individually he remains a relatively obscure figure outside specialist martyrologies and Vietnamese Catholic memory; most surviving notices give only his order, priesthood, year of birth, date of execution, and place within the 1900 and 1988 recognitions. No separate cult of patronage distinct from that of the Vietnamese Martyrs as a group is securely documented in standard sources.
