Biography

Short Description

The name Domitius belongs to an old Roman gens and was borne by consuls, commanders, and imperial relatives in the late Republic and early Empire. In Christian hagiography the same name, sometimes appearing as Domice in French sources or as Dometius in Greek ones, was later attached to more than one locally venerated holy man. The present subject is given without a Wikidata identifier, without a diocese, and without a feast, so these figures cannot honestly be collapsed into a single verified life. Birth and death years, cities of birth and death, a burial place, and formal acts of canonization or beatification are in every case either unknown or legendary, and they are therefore left blank rather than supplied by conjecture.

In the Latin West the best-known bearer is the priest-hermit commemorated in the diocese of Amiens as Saint Domice. Tradition places him in Picardy in the fourth or fifth century and makes him the spiritual father of the recluse Saint Ulphia, who lived in the marshes of the Somme. Later medieval storytelling added picturesque details, including a bell used to call the hours of prayer and a command that silenced the frogs so that the office could be heard. None of this rests on contemporary documents. No reliable source records his parents, a city of birth, a year of death, or a tomb that has been archaeologically identified as his. His cult was diocesan rather than universal. He was not Bishop of Rome, nor the holder of any patriarchal see.

A different Domitius is remembered in the Coptic Orthodox Church together with Maximus. The Coptic synaxarium, read on 14 Toba, describes the two as brothers of imperial Roman birth who abandoned palace life, passed through Syria, and became monks in the desert of Scetis under Macarius the Great in the fourth century. The Monastery of the Romans (Deir al-Baramus) in Wadi al-Natrun takes its name from this pair. Historians note that the known sons of the Valentinianic emperors were not called Maximus and Domitius, so the courtly origin is pious legend. What can be said more cautiously is that the monastic settlement of Scetis in the fourth century included monks of Roman or Latin background and that a joint cult of Maximus and Domitius became established there. Again, no birth year, no death year, and no historically verified place of burial can be given.

Eastern menologia further record a martyr Dometius of Persia, a convert who lived as a monk and was put to death in the fourth century, often in connection with the anti-Christian measures associated with the emperor Julian. Latin, Greek, and Syriac calendars do not agree perfectly on the spelling of his name or on a single feast day, and he should not be identified without evidence with the hermit of Amiens or with the monk of Scetis. Across all these traditions, marriage and children are undocumented; several of the figures are presented as monks or hermits, which would imply celibacy, but that implication is not the same as a verified biographical fact for an unspecified Domitius. Patronages, if any, remained local and are not securely listed in the major martyrologies. In short, Domitius as an unqualified subject is a name shared by distinct late-antique holy men whose lives are known chiefly through later legend, and the historian’s duty is to leave blank what the sources do not support.
