Biography

Short Description

Saint Domnica, also known as Domnina or Domnike and styled the Righteous of Constantinople, is an Eastern Orthodox monastic saint whose memory is kept on 8 January. The account of her life is drawn from later Orthodox synaxaria and menologia rather than from contemporary fifth-century documents. According to that tradition she was born in Carthage, in Roman North Africa, to pagan parents during the fourth century. In youth she was attracted to the Christian faith. With four other maidens she left Carthage, passing through Alexandria before arriving in Constantinople while Theodosius I, called the Great, was emperor (379–395).

In the capital the group was received by Nectarius, Patriarch of Constantinople from 381 to 397, who baptized Domnica and her companions. After baptism she took up the monastic life and became abbess of a community of virgins, described in the sources as a skete or convent. The tradition portrays her as a severe ascetic. She is credited with the gifts of healing the sick, casting out demons, wonderworking, and prophecy or clairvoyance. Emperors and churchmen of the city are said to have held her in honor, though specific dated episodes are not preserved in independent chronicles.

The same liturgical sources state that she died peacefully in Constantinople about the year 474. If she arrived as a young woman in the last decades of the fourth century, that repose date would imply a very long life; the figure 474 should therefore be treated as traditional rather than as a precisely documented obituary. There is no reliable record of her burial place or of the later history of her relics. She is not known to have married or to have had children; the hagiography presents her exclusively as a consecrated virgin and abbess. She held no episcopal, patriarchal, or papal office.

Veneration of Domnica belongs to the ancient layer of Orthodox sanctity. She was not the subject of a medieval papal canonization or beatification process of the Latin type. Her cult is attested by her inclusion in the Byzantine synaxarion and in the calendars of the Slavic churches, where she is called the Righteous or Venerable Domnica of Constantinople. Beyond the general honor paid to monastic saints, no specialized patronages of places, professions, or illnesses are securely attached to her name in the sources. Historical knowledge of her remains limited to this hagiographical outline.
