Biography

Short Description

Saint Domnina of Syria is a fifth-century Christian recluse whose life is known almost exclusively from the contemporary testimony of Theodoret, bishop of Cyrrhus, in his Historia Religiosa, a collection of portraits of Syrian ascetics written in the 440s. Theodoret presents her as a woman of a respectable local family who adopted a life of enclosure without leaving the vicinity of her mother's house. She built a small hut or cell in the garden and remained there, covering her person with a veil of goat's hair so that her face was never seen by visitors. Communication, when it occurred, took place through a narrow opening. Theodoret, who wrote while she was still alive, does not record her parentage beyond the mention of her mother, nor does he give a birthplace more precise than the region of Cyrrhus in the Roman province of Syria, in northern Syria near the modern Turkish-Syrian frontier.

Her ascetic practice, as Theodoret describes it, consisted of extreme fasting, night-long standing prayer, and continual psalmody. She took as food only lentils soaked in water, and that in small quantity. Despite her withdrawal she attracted a following, particularly among women who came to the hut to receive her blessing and to seek counsel. Theodoret stresses her tears, her humility, and her refusal of any form of ostentation. No reliable source preserves an exact year of birth or of death. Because she was living when the Historia Religiosa was composed, her death must fall after the early 440s; later liturgical books sometimes assign it to about 450, but that figure is traditional rather than documented. She is not recorded as having married or as having had children; the sources treat her as a consecrated virgin and monastic recluse. She belonged to no named religious order of the later Western type.

Domnina's way of life is characteristic of a strand of Syrian Christianity in which holy women remained on family property or at the edge of villages rather than in remote desert lavras. Enclosure, the veil, and the role of the living saint as intercessor for the surrounding community are all typical of this milieu. Theodoret's account is encomiastic and shaped by biblical models, yet it remains one of the few near-contemporary descriptions of a female Syrian recluse and is therefore of high historical value compared with the later legendary passions attached to other women of the same name.

The Eastern Orthodox Church commemorates Venerable Domnina of Syria on 1 March. She was never the subject of a medieval papal canonization, a procedure that did not exist in the fifth century; her cult is that of an ancient saint received into the Byzantine synaxaria. She should not be confused with other early Christian figures named Domnina, including a virgin-martyr of Tarsus or Anazarbus commemorated in October and a mother, also named Domnina, who in fourth-century homiletic tradition, notably a homily of John Chrysostom, is said to have drowned with her daughters Berenice and Prosdoce during persecution in order to preserve their chastity. Those martyrs belong to the age of Diocletian and are distinct from the fifth-century recluse of Cyrrhus. No verified patronage, burial site, or precise civic origin beyond the Cyrrhus region can be assigned to Domnina of Syria from surviving reliable sources.
