Biography

Short Description

Saint Domnio, also known as Domnius or Domninus and in Croatian as Sveti Dujam or Sveti Duje, was bishop of Salona in the Roman province of Dalmatia and is venerated as a martyr. He is the principal patron saint of the city of Split in present-day Croatia. Almost nothing about his life can be established from contemporary documents. He belongs to the generation of bishops who led Christian communities in the Adriatic provinces during the late third century and who suffered in the persecution initiated by the Emperor Diocletian in 303. Salona was then a large and prosperous city, the capital of Dalmatia, and lay only a short distance from the great palace that Diocletian built for his retirement.

Later medieval and early modern hagiography supplied Domnio with a detailed biography that cannot be verified from reliable historical sources. According to this tradition he was born at Antioch in Syria of a noble family, received a Christian education in the East, travelled to Rome, and was sent from there as a missionary to Dalmatia, where he became bishop of Salona. Some versions even claim a kinship with the imperial house. These stories reflect the common desire of later ages to link local saints with the apostolic sees and with Rome; they should not be treated as historical fact. What the early Church did remember, and what the Roman Martyrology still records, is that Domnio was bishop of Salona and that he was put to death there together with eight soldiers.

The traditional date of his martyrdom is 304, during the height of the Diocletianic persecution. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 7 May. After Salona was destroyed in the first half of the seventh century, the remaining Christian inhabitants took refuge inside the nearby Palace of Diocletian. They converted the emperor’s octagonal mausoleum into a church, which became the Cathedral of Saint Domnius. The relics of the martyr-bishop were translated from Salona to this new cathedral, where they have been venerated ever since. The building remains one of the most important monuments of late antique and early medieval Christianity on the Adriatic.

Domnio’s cult has been continuous in Dalmatia from late antiquity to the present. He is invoked as protector of Split and of the Archdiocese of Split-Makarska. His feast on 7 May is kept with civic and liturgical solemnity in Split. Beyond the brief martyrological notice and the archaeological and architectural evidence of his shrine, the historical record is silent. No authentic acts of his martyrdom survive, and no writings of his own are known. He is therefore remembered primarily as the founding martyr-bishop of the Church of Salona and as the saint whose relics and cathedral gave a Christian identity to the city that rose from Diocletian’s palace.
