Biography

Short Description

Saint Domnus, also attested as Domnius, Domnio, and in Croatian as Sveti Duje, was bishop of Salona, the chief city of the Roman province of Dalmatia, and a martyr of the Diocletianic persecution. He is the principal patron of Split in present-day Croatia. Contemporary narrative sources for his life do not survive. What can be said with reasonable historical confidence rests on early martyrological commemoration, the archaeology of Christian Salona, and the continuous local cult. The Hieronymian Martyrology and the later Roman Martyrology remember Domnion, bishop of Salona, together with soldier companions. Historians customarily place the martyrdom in 304, when the imperial edicts against the clergy were being enforced in the eastern Adriatic. No verified birth year, birthplace, or family history exists. Medieval legends that make him a nobleman of Antioch, a physician, and a disciple of the apostle Peter are pious attempts to give him an apostolic pedigree; they are chronologically impossible if he died under Diocletian and should not be treated as fact.

Salona, whose ruins lie at modern Solin beside Split, was a substantial Roman colony and the administrative heart of Dalmatia. A Christian community and an episcopal see are attested there well before the Great Persecution. Diocletian’s own retirement palace stood immediately beside the city, so the enforcement of the anti-Christian legislation in this neighbourhood was neither remote nor theoretical. Domnus enters the record as the bishop who suffered death when those edicts were applied to the Salonitan church. Passion accounts, which cannot be verified in every particular and which use conventional hagiographical motifs, describe him as executed with several soldiers who had become Christians. The older martyrological date is 11 April. The existence of a martyred bishop of Salona bearing this name in the first years of the fourth century is accepted in the history of the Dalmatian church, even though the surviving literary passions are late and stylized.

After the persecution a cult formed at his tomb in the cemetery of Manastirine outside Salona, where a basilica rose over the graves of the Salonitan martyrs. In the seventh century, under pressure from Avar and Slav incursions, the remaining population of Salona took refuge inside the massive precinct of Diocletian’s palace, which became the nucleus of medieval Split. The relics of Saint Domnus were translated into that city and in time enshrined in the former imperial mausoleum, consecrated as the cathedral and still called the Cathedral of Saint Domnius. From that translation he has been honoured as patron of Split and of the archdiocese that inherited the ancient see of Salona. The local solemnity is kept on 7 May; the older martyrological commemoration on 11 April also remains in calendars.

Nothing reliable is known of a wife, children, or membership in a religious order. He was a diocesan bishop, not bishop of Rome and not patriarch of an Eastern see. Like other martyrs of the Great Persecution he was never the object of a later papal canonization process; his cult is of immemorial standing, witnessed by the martyrologies, the remains at Salona, the cathedral of Split, and the uninterrupted local feast. Other late-antique churchmen also bore the name Domnus, notably two patriarchs of Antioch, but the hagiographical figure associated with a stable cult, a feast, and a patronage is the martyr-bishop of Salona.
