Biography

Short Description

Donatus of Besançon (known in French as Donat de Besançon) was a seventh-century Frankish churchman, bishop of Besançon, and author of a monastic rule for women. He came from the high aristocracy of Transjuranian Burgundy. According to Jonas of Bobbio’s Life of Columbanus, written in the 640s, his father was Waldelenus, a duke in the Jura region, and his mother was Flavia. Jonas relates that the couple, long without children, obtained Columbanus’s blessing and afterwards entrusted their son Donatus to the Irish abbot to be raised at Luxeuil. Whatever the hagiographical colouring of the childlessness motif, the family connection with Luxeuil is accepted by historians: Donatus was formed in the Columbanian community in the decades around 600 and became a monk there. He is not recorded as having married or had children, and the childhood oblation to Luxeuil implies a monastic, celibate career from youth.

In the 620s Donatus was made bishop of Besançon, the metropolitan see of Sequania (Maxima Sequanorum). He remained a patron of monastic life. He founded, in or near Besançon, a house of monks dedicated to Saint Paul, which followed a Columbanian observance. After Waldelenus’s death his mother Flavia established a convent of nuns at Jussa-Moutier (Jussamoutier) beside Besançon. For that community Donatus composed a Rule for Virgins (Regula ad virgines), probably in the second quarter of the seventh century. The text, which is extant, is a compilation: it draws extensively on the Rule of Saint Benedict, on the rule of Caesarius of Arles for nuns, and on the monastic legislation of Columbanus, adapting them for a women’s house under episcopal oversight. It is one of the principal surviving rules written specifically for Frankish nuns in the seventh century.

Donatus appears in the subscription lists of Frankish councils, which supply the only closely dated points in his career. He attended the Council of Clichy in 627 and the Council of Chalon-sur-Saône, dated by scholars to the years 647–653. These attestations show him active as metropolitan over a span of some three decades. Traditional accounts place his death about 660. He was honoured as a saint in the church of Besançon; later martyrologies and diocesan calendars assign him the feast of 7 August. No contemporary narrative of his death or burial has been preserved, and the medieval cult remained essentially local. He was not Bishop of Rome or a patriarch of an Eastern see, and no papal act of formal canonization is recorded; veneration is of the pre-congregation type usual for seventh-century Gallic bishops.

Beyond the local episcopal list, Donatus’s historical importance lies in the Rule that bears his name and in his place among the bishops who carried Columbanian monasticism into the Frankish hierarchy after Columbanus’s death. His career illustrates the alliance between Burgundian ducal families and Luxeuil, and his compilation for Jussa-Moutier documents how Benedictine, Caesarian, and Irish observances were combined in a seventh-century convent in eastern Francia. Precise places of birth, death, and burial are not given in the surviving sources.
