Biography

Short Description

Donatian and Rogatian, known in French as Donatien and Rogatien, were brothers commemorated as Christian martyrs of Nantes in late Roman Gaul. The principal narrative of their lives is a Latin passio of relatively late date, which medieval martyrologies and local tradition follow. According to that account they belonged to a distinguished family of Nantes. Donatian had already received baptism and lived openly as a Christian. His brother Rogatian, moved by Donatian’s example, sought baptism as well, but the bishop of the city had withdrawn because of persecution, so Rogatian remained a catechumen, having received only the first rites of admission to the Church.

When an edict against Christians was enforced in the region—attributed in the tradition either to the co-emperor Maximian or to the Great Persecution under Diocletian—the brothers were arrested for refusing to sacrifice to the gods of Rome. Interrogated by a magistrate or prefect, they confessed Christ. Rogatian’s unbaptized status is emphasized in the legend: he is said to have asked Donatian to bless him in place of the missing sacrament, and later piety has spoken of his baptism of blood. Both were held in prison, tortured on the rack, and wounded in the head with lances or swords before being beheaded. Their feast is kept on 24 May. Medieval and early modern sources commonly date the martyrdom to 287; other notices place it in the first years of the fourth century. Because the passio is not a contemporary document and the imperial attribution varies, the exact year cannot be established with certainty.

The martyrs were buried at Nantes. Over their tomb a church was built which, in its later form, is the Basilica of Saint-Donatien and Saint-Rogatien, long a focus of civic and diocesan devotion. Their relics were disturbed and translated on several occasions, notably during the Viking attacks on the Loire in the ninth century and in subsequent medieval reconstructions. The Roman Martyrology records them on 24 May as brothers who, after prolonged imprisonment and torture, were pierced through the head and finally beheaded at Nantes in Brittany. They appear in Usuard and other early medieval martyrologies, which indicates that their cult was already established well before the central Middle Ages.

Donatian and Rogatian are honored as the principal patron saints of Nantes and of its diocese. They were laymen, not members of a religious order. No historically reliable evidence records a wife or children for either brother. As saints of the pre-Congregation era they were never formally canonized by a pope according to the later juridical process; their cult rests on immemorial liturgical veneration. Modern hagiographical scholarship treats many narrative embellishments of the passio with caution, while recognizing Donatian and Rogatian as genuine representatives of the early Christian community of Nantes whose memory was preserved in the city’s liturgy and topography from late antiquity onward.
