Biography

Short Description

Donatianus (Donatian), Praesidius, and the bishops commemorated with them were Catholic prelates in the Vandal kingdom of North Africa in the later fifth century. After the Vandals crossed from Spain in 429 and captured Carthage in 439, they established an Arian Germanic kingdom over the former Roman provinces of Africa Proconsularis, Byzacena, and neighbouring territories. The Romano-African population remained overwhelmingly Nicene (Catholic). Tension between Arian rulers and Catholic clergy was recurrent under Gaiseric and became acute under his son Huneric (reigned 477–484), who in the last years of his reign undertook a systematic effort to impose Arian doctrine, confiscate Catholic churches, and break the resistance of the episcopate.

In 483 Huneric summoned the Catholic bishops to a disputation at Carthage with Arian clergy. When the Catholics refused to abandon the Nicene faith, the king issued a harsh edict in February 484. Churches were closed or transferred to Arians, Catholic worship was forbidden, and large numbers of bishops were beaten, robbed, and driven into exile, some to desert regions of Byzacena or Tripolitania and others to Corsica. The near-contemporary History of the Vandal Persecution by Victor of Vita is the principal narrative source for these events. Later martyrological tradition groups Donatianus, Praesidius, Mansuetus, Germanus, and Fusculus among the bishops who, for defending Catholic teaching, were most cruelly beaten with rods or clubs by Huneric’s order and then sent into exile, where they died.

The same commemoration includes Laetus, bishop of Nepte (Nepta) in Byzacena, described as a man of great learning and zeal. After a long imprisonment in a foul dungeon he was burned alive. The precise sees of Donatianus, Praesidius, Mansuetus, Germanus, and Fusculus are not securely identified in surviving texts, and no independent biographies of them exist. Their names are preserved chiefly through the Roman Martyrology, which places their memoria on 6 September and presents them as completing martyrdom in exile as a consequence of the 484 persecution.

Little else can be verified. Birthplaces, family circumstances, earlier careers, and the exact sites and dates of individual deaths are unknown. Their cult belongs to the wider African remembrance of confessors and martyrs of the Vandal period, transmitted by liturgical calendars rather than by extensive hagiographical narratives. No historically reliable patronages are attached to the group.
